HP&E Department Overview:

An opportunity has arisen for a Fitter to join VolkerRail Plant, working within the Hired Plant and Equipment Department.

The HP&E department specialises in supplying self-operated rail maintenance plant and equipment to the rail industry.


HP&E have 16 Platform Basket Evo Rail Mobile Elevated Working Platforms, providing a solution to our clients working at height needs focusing predominantly on working on overhead line equipment.

All of our machines are serviced to a vigorous maintenance regime by a resource pool of qualified Fitters giving the client the option of fitter cover when the machines are operational.


We are also committed to investment in new assets and technology, such as HGV Wiring Units to ensure our continued growth and success.


Job Summary:


The key duties will include:

  • The undertaking and recording of weekly, monthly, 6 monthly and annual maintenance of Hired Plant and Equipment (including MEWPS & Wiring Units) in line with company engineering standards and legislation.
  • Fault diagnostic, recording and rectifying
  • Ensure that all machine documentation, logbooks, worksheets, etc. are completed to the correct standard in a punctual timeframe.
  • Provide operational fitter cover, predominantly on weekends, to VolkerRail's clients to ensure reliability of the machines.
  • Oversee the safe delivery of Plant movements via hauliers in line with company standard.

Job Requirements:

You will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach.

  • Be either a trained apprentice in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or possess an NVQ level 3 (mechanical or electrical) or equivalent.
  • Have demonstrable experience in fault finding, repairing and maintaining plant, equipment and HGV Vehicles.
  • Be able to read engineering drawings/schematics with regards to fault finding.
  • Be flexible in your approach and willing to work nights, weekends, bank holidays and lodge away from home.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • A responsible attitude and high level of safety awareness.
Flexibility is essential for this role as there will be travel and weekend working.


Minimum starting salary £28,250 (£13.58 p/h) for Trainee role (must hold NVQ L3 in Electrical/ Mechanical Engineering), £34,560 (£16.62 p/h) Fitter (who has previous experience and NVQ L3 in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering) and a company commercial vehicle.

Overtime is common and is paid at Time & 1/4 for Mid-week shifts and Time & 1⁄2 for Weekend shifts.
