The department is introducing Digital Pathology and we are looking for a person to lead the scanning of slides. You will be responsible for ensuring the slides are scanned in a timely manner and are of appropriate quality. You will also be responsible for ensuring that the scanners are operating efficiently and effectively


You will mainly be involved in the day to day running of the slide scanners and ensuring the quality and efficiency of the scanning is maintained.

You will be responsible for the daily maintenance of the scanners and ensuring that the outputs are of high quality


You will also work in all areas of the Histology Laboratory and be involved in provision of the technical service.

You will be checking that the correct sample type has been received, correct sample labelling and suitability for diagnostic investigations, in accordance with Pathology laboratory policies and standard operating procedures

You will be inputting data on the laboratory computer system and trouble-shooting issues that may arise

The Histology Department is based within the Pathology Department at Cheltenham General Hospital and is one of the biggest within the South West.


We have a team of medical staff, scientists and support staff working in a busy environment and are focused on providing a high quality efficient service.

Carry out daily maintenance of the scanners

Load and unload the scanners

Ensure scans are appropriate quality

Lead and direct other members of the team who may be working with you

Work in all sections of the department on a rotational basis

Participate in the reception, preparation and documentation of specimens for Histology (including Post-mortem) material in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols

Participate in specimen processing and the production of histology sections for microscopic examination. This includes cut up, embedding, microtomy and staining

Rotate through all sections of the department including the Special Techniques area, which covers Immunocytochemistry and Molecular Pathology

Input test requests, including tests, patient demographics, requesting clinician and location for report onto the laboratory computer system in a timely fashion in order to maintain efficient workflow and laboratory turnaround times and taking into account the urgency of the request

Participate in the training and teaching of trainee Biomedical Scientists, MLAs and other healthcare professionals
