Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint an Emergency Department Navigator to be a part of the Safeguarding Team ( the post-holder will be based in the Emergency Department at Royal Preston Hospital).


As an Emergency Department (ED) Navigator, you will be working on the frontline to support children and adult victims of serious violence.

Using a "trauma informed and trusted relationship" model, you will provide immediate safeguarding support and safety planning advice. You will assist victims and build trusted relationships, whilst supporting them to access other services.


The post holder will be employed and accountable to the organisation, but will work closely with the Violence Reduction Network and Serious Violence Duty Leads within the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board and across the Partnership.


The team is looking for an experienced advocate for children and adults, ensuring delivery of improved health outcomes for those at risk of harm from serious violence.

You will support victims of serious violence, whilst being an integral member of the multi-agency Safeguarding team, ensuring that the health needs of this most vulnerable group are included in any multi-agency assessments.


You will maximise positive outcomes for identified victims by building trusted relationships and supporting victims at a reachable and teachable moment.

You will work closely with ED staff, the Safeguarding Team, Police, Social Care and community services to ensure positive outcomes for victims.

You will work with the Named and Lead Professionals for Safeguarding to ensure appropriate quality assurance mechanisms are in place and to assist in the development and raising awareness across the Trust.


You will work in the Emergency Departments at Preston alongside other professionals and will work closely with the victims to ensure appropriate safety planning is in place and continued support.


It is essential that the post holder is a victim focused professional and able to build good working relationships with a wide range of professionals.

The post-holder will be pro-active when supporting victims within a health setting.

The primary aim of this role is to reduce repeat incidents of serious violence, support victims, increase their engagement with Safeguarding and to signpost or refer to on-going community support.


Through a Trauma Informed and Trusted Relationship model, provide support to and manage complex cases involving vulnerable children and adults who have been victims of serious violence.

To be the link health professional for victims and services they need to access.


To facilitate, develop and sustain effective working relationships with health professionals across the health economy and other agencies in the development of Safeguarding practices.


Establish and maintain communication with groups and individuals on complex and sensitive issues in a range of inter and intra agency settings within Health, Social Care, Police, Education and Voluntary Sectors.

Manage unexpected and unpredictable safeguarding activity and the competing demands of this highly complex area of work.


Analyse complex, high risk safeguarding situations and provide professional judgements as to a range of options, deciding on best courses of action to ensure positive outcomes for children and adults.


To work closely with other Named and Lead Professionals in supporting all activities in relation to the ED Navigator service, ensuring that the Trust discharges its responsibilities in relation to Safeguarding Children and Adults who have been victims of serious violence.

Ensure clear pathways for accessing the service and pathways for victims to access appropriate services in the locality.


Continuously contribute to the monitoring and review of the service, to ensure it continues to provide effective support to victims of serious violence.

Ensure changes required are communicated and if agreed implemented, whilst in line with Trust policies and guidelines.

To advise Police, Social Care and other agencies on health matters with regard to safeguarding children and adults.

The ability to retain a clear health identity whilst working with multi-agency teams.

To contribute to the achievement of the service requirements and ensuring service meets agreed contractual objectives.

To contribute and ensure that LTHTR meets its obligations under all relevant legal frameworks for children and adults.

To have an understanding of the Lancashire Violence Reduction Network Outcomes Framework.


Demonstrate an ability to manage emotionally demanding work that can be distressing and stressful, and be able to support others to carry out such work.

Promote, influence, and develop relevant training in relation to serious violence on both a single and interagency basis to ensure that the competency needs of health staff
