Description

Alder Hey Children's Hospital(AHCH)is a designated Major Trauma Centre for the North West Region in partnership with The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

Children and young people who sustain major trauma injuries require highly skilled and co-ordinated care from the scene of the accident through to acute care, expert acute rehabilitation and ongoing holistic community rehabilitation.

The post holder will be responsible for providing senior professional, operational, and clinical leadership.


They will support and co-ordinate the major trauma patient pathway and the role will be integral to the ongoing clinical governance of the major trauma service, contributing to the daily updating of the trauma registry; acting as a key member of the Senior Team leading the process.

The post holder will represent the AHCH Major Trauma Service locally and nationally.

They will be responsible for ensuring that the Major Trauma Key Indicators are achieved and implementing pathways and procedures to improve the pathway and experiences for children and their families.


Clinical Duties:


The post holder will:


  • Communicate with the trauma lead and lead clinicians to monitor patient progress, ensuring appropriately timed inter hospital transfers as necessary; and monitor length of stay with a view to minimising discharge delays.
  • To oversee key worker duties to facilitate the patient's progress on the pathway at all stages of the episodes of care.
  • Review the planning, workload allocation, delivery and evaluation of rehabilitation programmes for major trauma patients.
  • Oversee patients' physical, cognitive, communication and psychosocial needs are fully addressed by a detailed inter-disciplinary team (IDT) assessment and regular review process.
  • Understand the full range of support available within the clinical team and how the use of therapies, psychology and education helps patients regain lost skills and reduce dependency in medical, nursing and therapy needs.
  • Appreciate the changing levels of medical and therapy care and support required by children and young people during the rehabilitation process and ensuring a coordinated and flexible needs-led approach between professional disciplines with regards to timing, intensity and duration of treatment.
  • Act as a source of expertise in specialist rehabilitation to IDTs in all settings and to other professionals from external agencies.
  • Establish robust partnership working relationships in the community/community settings (primary care/schools, community services).
The core major trauma team consists of;

  • 2 x Consultant Leads (Lead for Major Trauma & Lead for Acute Rehabilitation)
  • 1 x Lead Nurse
  • 1 x Service Manager
  • 4 x Major Trauma Rehabilitation Coordinators
  • 1 x Personal Assistant / Administrator

Education and Training:


The post holder will:


  • Contribute to the delivery of specific and relevant teaching programmes for all disciplines and grades of staff, client group and carers within the Trust and community in relation to area of speciality.
  • Review and evaluate relevant teaching programmes and contribute to the development of new programmes when a need is identified.
  • Pursue their own education in line with national agendas, and personal need formulating personal objectives related to service need within personal development plan.
  • Seek appropriate peer support and clinical supervision.
  • Provide clinical supervision.
  • Provide an environment that encourages client centred involvement where clients are facilitated to ask for help, advice and education.
  • Participate in the development of clinical governance systems and structures ensuring service is represented as appropriate.
  • Ensure all clinical practice is evidence based.
  • Evaluate clinical practice by contributing to audits of service/role.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current research in all aspects of their work and to advise others on the implementation of relevant research findings to practice.
  • Develop research projects in response to identified needs of the patients/service.
Performance and Data Management


The post holder will:


  • Participate actively in the major trauma centre audit process as required and support the analysis and presentation of the data.
  • Ensure that opportunities for non-medical research and audit are maximised, to support the improvement of clinical outcomes and patient experience.
  • Ensure that research and audit activity is conducted in line with Trust standards and that results shared with other Specialties as appropriate.
  • Support the Clinical Lead for major trauma in keeping a comprehensive up to date trauma registry.
  • Undertake regular clinical audits in line with the Trauma Audit Research Network (TARN) and Trust Audit Department.
