An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join our ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) team.

The position is a 9-month contract to cover maternity leave.


The post holder will take on a clinical role, holistically supporting patients on the ERAS pathway and assisting in both their prehabilitation and rehabilitation.

They will undertake health assessments and signpost to the most relevant or suitable services. Making Every Contact Count, they will work closely with other healthcare professionals to promote patients' health and wellbeing. They will also be responsible for providing planned, safe, effective and evidenced based care for patients on the wards.


In addition, they will take on an administrative role, collecting and reporting clinical data in order to support positive change and service improvement.

They will be responsible for educating staff and patients and will participate in formal teaching sessions.
Applicants must have excellent communication skills to support in the delivery of excellent, patient centred care. They will be proficient, competent and require mínimal supervision.

  • Coordinate and undertake patient health and wellbeing assessments under the direct/indirect supervision of the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist with signposting or referring patients to the relevant services or allied health professionals based on the assessment outcomes.
  • Assist in the delivery of health promotion advice as appropriate to role and in line with own level of competence.
  • Contribute to ongoing assessment and evaluation of care, maintaining regular and close communication with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Develop a rapport with patients and encourage interest and participation in their treatment programme.
  • Act as the patient's advocate through effective support and information, enabling them to make informed choices and decisions concerning treatment.
  • Communicate any anticipated needs to the relevant departments to ensure effective recovery and discharge.
  • Provide counselling, advice and information to patients and their relatives on the principles of the ERAS pathway through the perioperative period.
  • Participate in the delivery of the multiple patient education programmes and prehabilitation programmes.
  • Oversee the delivery of ERAS+. Educate staff and patients on the principles of the care bundle. Provide regular updates to colleagues regarding compliance
- celebrating successes and highlighting any potential problems in delivery.

  • Within the clinical areas, assist patients to participate in the ERAS pathway and to achieve their daily goals. Proactively help patients to take an active role in their care delivery.
  • Perform agreed procedures and clinical skills appropriate to the area and in line with own level of competence.
  • Participate in the followup of patients taking appropriate action as needed.
  • Deal with enquiries, some of which may be of a sensitive nature from patients, members of the public, healthcare professionals and research teams and refer on appropriately.
  • Ensure thorough and accurate documentation of any interventions. Communicate effectively with colleagues, providing clear information when sharing information, delegating, or handing over responsibility of care.
  • Support and assist in the training of new staff including participation in the Surgical Study Day. Act as a role model to all staff.
  • Work in partnership with the senior nursing staff and wider multiprofessional team on service improvement initiatives.
  • Work autonomously on assigned projects, ensuring a high standard of work, prioritising effectively, and keeping to given deadlines.
  • Participate in gathering feedback on the service and using this to influence and change practice.
  • Keep up to date with relevant evidence to inform practice.
  • Extract clinical audit data from clinical records and hospital information systems and collect data directly from patients in a variety of settings.
