My client in
Maidstone is looking for an experienced
Band 5 Histology Biomedical Scientist for a locum contract.


Job Role:

  • To be technically proficient in all areas of basic histology laboratory practice including
- specimen reception tasks, providing support during sample dissection, use and
- maintenance of tissue processors, cryotomy, embedding, microtomy, routine and special
- staining

  • To perform immunocytochemistry using fully automated staining systems under the
supervision of more senior laboratory staff

  • To ensure the quality of routine and special stains through use of interpretive skills and using the correct controls to validate the tests.
  • To perform immunofluorescence testing and frozen sectioning
  • To ensure that the quality of laboratory processes is to an appropriate high standard and
that such results are timely and accurate.

  • Ensures appropriate use and maintenance of all laboratory equipment, much of which is
complex, sensitive and expensive

  • Is fully conversant with and adheres to departmental policies and Standard Operating
Procedures (SOP)

  • Complies with the requirements of internal and external quality assurance schemes.
  • Assists in improving and developing departmental quality by active participation in laboratory audit activities
- and guidelines.

  • To take appropriate action in the event of a health and safety incident (e.g. spillage of
hazardous chemicals) in order to minimise the risk to the staff and others

  • To bring to the attention of the Safety Lead anything that appears unsafe so that
corrective action can be initiated. This may include laboratory protocols, equipment,

reagents and staff activities as well as estates problems (such as plumbing, lighting

building structure)

  • To assist the Safety Lead and Safety Coordinator in producing health and safety
documentation such as hazard profiles and risk and COSHH assessments.

  • Attends departmental and Trustwide staff meetings and training as appropriate.
  • Works in accordance with the professional, ethical and legal codes of the HCPC, RCPath
and the Trust's protocols and guidelines.

  • Monitor stocks of consumables within the laboratory and initiates reordering
  • Performs preventative maintenance on highly complex and expensive automated
systems ensuring appropriate records are kept

  • Accepts clinical samples into the department and assesses them for suitability, taking
appropriate remedial action in cases of non-compliance.

  • Displays and maintains an appropriate level of IT skills, competently using the pathology

Qualifications and Experience required:
-
HCPC registered as a BMS:

  • Experience working in a histology laboratory
  • Clear evidence of relevant continued professional development (CPD) activity
  • Basic understanding of Histology laboratory technique
  • Basic understanding of laboratory health and safety requirements
  • High level of manual dexterity
