About Us
We are currently recruiting for a Developing Nuclear Regulator for Radiological Monitoring and Assessment to join our team.

At the Environment Agency, we are responsible for regulating the disposal of radioactive waste across the nuclear industry in England.

Our radiological monitoring and assessment specialists manage radiological monitoring contracts to provide measurements of radioactive discharges from nuclear facilities and levels in the environment.

We assess the impacts of past and future discharges and disposals of radioactive waste on people and wildlife. We provide technical advice and guidance, in these areas, to our regulators.

We work with other UK regulators and the Food Standards Agency, commissioning habits surveys around nuclear sites and share information.

We ensure the public are informed about levels of radioactivity and any potential impacts by publishing an annual report on Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE).

In collaboration with stakeholders and experts in the field, we use the latest scientific information to develop guidance and systems for monitoring discharges, modelling radioactivity in the environment and producing tools for assessing the potential impact on people and the environment.

Why Choose Us:

  • Site regulation
  • Ensuring radioactive discharges and their presence in the environment can be accurately measured and their potential impacts on people and wildlife assessed.
-
Waste and Decommissioning - With ongoing radioactive waste production and changes in disposal and recycling practices, we need monitoring to assure waste characterisation and consignment, and assessment to underpin the suitability of receiving facilities.
-
Nuclear new build
  • Opportunity to contribute to a multidisciplinary team ensuring that new nuclear power stations are built and their impact on the environment is understood and minimised.

What will I need?

Essential:

A Scientific Degree or equivalent vocational experience. You will need some experience of radiological monitoring/radio-analysis and/or radiological modelling and assessment.

You'll also have an awareness of a range of nuclear and environmental issues, including understanding of radioactivity, radionuclide properties, environmental behaviour and analytical methods.

You'll be technically competent in data management and manipulation.

You'll need some understanding of relevant legislation and an appreciation of the challenges the industry faces and proof that you have lived in the UK for the last 3 years in line with Environment Agency enhanced security checks.

You'll also need:
