Ivy Rock Partners is thrilled to be working with Brunel University in recruiting a Head of Financial Planning and Analysis.

The Head of Financial Planning and Analysis is a key and pivotal member of the finance team, whose remit spans across the Universityproviding time critical and high-quality financial information to support the University in making effective financial decisions.

The post-holder's will own the end to end processes for month end reporting, planning, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow and capital.


This role offers hybrid working with 3 days required in the office

Key duties and responsibilities:


People Management and Leadership

  • Give direction and support to direct reports enabling them to create high performing teams across the function.
  • You will build and maintain effective business partnering relationships across all departments within the University
  • Ensure that a culture of customerfocused service delivery is consistently maintained across all aspects of the Finance department's provision
  • Work collaboratively with other Finance Business Partners (FBP) and colleagues across Finance to develop shared insights, priorities and ideas.
  • Influence across Finance and the University to support shaping culture and promoting Brunel values.

Financial Management Information

  • Lead the production of accurate and comprehensive financial and management reporting.
  • Regular creation of papers and briefings up to and including the Executive Board, Finance Committee and Council.
  • Develop corporate level management information to support in year monitoring, challenge and decision making at University, department and activity levels.
  • Deliver, a business partnering approach to supporting activities at the University. Influencing departmental decision making and creating a more integrated finance support service.
  • Work with departments to deliver operational and financial plans, providing monitoring on progress to senior colleagues.
  • Develop and keep under review financial and nonfinancial Key Performance Indicators and ensure reporting of these is effective and appropriately engaged with both internally and externally.
  • Owner of financial reporting systems and process, driving developments as required.
  • Lead on monthly balance sheet reconciliations focusing on integrity of the balance sheet and associated control accounts. Ensuring these are completed on time and meet financial accounting standards. Ensuring errors are corrected and commentary is providedon significant movements.
  • End to end ownership of the capital process. To take the lead in managing and reporting on capital expenditure and ensure the fixed asset register (FAR) is maintained and reconciled to the general ledger on a quarterly basis.
  • Working closely with the FBP, AFBP and Research Accounting team to ensure expenditure on capital projects is monitored and reported appropriately, and that the University's capital accounting policies are adhered to in terms of capitalization of expenditure.
  • Ensure that depreciation charges are correctly calculated on a monthly basis and to be accountable for providing forecast, planning and budget depreciation charges based on reasonable assumptions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Estates and IT departments to ensure regular review of costs included in Assets Under Construction (AUC) and to ensure that completed projects are capitalised on the basis of appropriate documentation from operational areas.
  • Take the lead in liaising with colleagues external to Finance to ensure that a fixed asset verification exercise is undertaken on a rolling basis and that any assets disposed of are correctly recognised as such both within the FAR and the general ledger.
  • To be responsible for all aspects of accounting for deferred capital grants, including informing management reporting, yearend financial statement reporting, forecasting and ensuring that grants released are accounted for correctly within the revenue position.
  • To be proactive in working with the ERP team in designing appropriate reports to improve balance sheet and fixed asset reporting.
  • Lead and manage cashflow reporting and monitoring. Develop a cashflow model which assists the University in understanding the cash position throughout the year and the coming years. Provide insight and commentary to support the cashflow movements.
  • Working closely with treasury, AP & AR to develop an understanding of phased cashflow taking into account material activities.

Financial Planning and Strategic Support

  • Define policy, timetables and access to resources in the annual planning and budgeting round process (working in conjunction with the Head of Planning).
  • Supporting the Deputy of DoF, help develop the University Finance strategy and funding plan, including review and implementation of the operational and finance strategies, whilst taking the lead on the Management Reporting, financial planning, and forecasting.
  • Play a key role in delivering the strategic financial objectives of the university.
  • Lead the development of budgets and forecasts for internal and external stakeholders ensuring that these dovetail with operational plans.
  • Produce key reporting, ensuring robust financial monitoring and forecasting processes are in place as well as ensuring a strong control environment is operating effectively.
  • Coordinate regular reviews of performance against budget and likely outturns; acting as a trusted business partner to key stakeholders
  • Review, highlight and support the management of University financial risks; supporting financial assessment of risk as well as identification and implementation or mitigations.
