Description

Applications are invited from a highly motivated individual to work as a Research Assistant with Professor Sube Banerjee, Chair in Dementia, and the Sussex Partnership Foundation NHS Trust, within the Centre for Dementia Studies, and specifically on an innovative project joint funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The DETERMIND (DETERMinants of quality of life, care and costs, and consequences of INequalities in people with Dementia and their carers) Programme seeks to answer the following questions:
What is it that enables one family to live well with dementia and another with ostensibly the same illness and challenges to have an awful experience?

Which groups have better or worse outcomes following diagnosis of dementia and why are there inequalities in care and outcomes?

What can we learn from the experiences of people with dementia and their carers to deliver care and support that maximises quality of life for all?

To do this we have recruited a bespoke cohort of 1000 people newly diagnosed with dementia across three sites (Newcastle, South London and Sussex) and are currently in the process of undertaking yearly follow-up visits.

These visits are designed to explore their service use, well-being and quality of life during their post-diagnostic care journey.

The post will be primarily based at the Centre for Dementia Studies, University of Sussex (Falmer), although the Research Assistant will be required to travel extensively across Sussex and other surrounding areas to undertake home visits and work at other Trust locations.

DETERMIND has a well-established team of researchers who have been in post for the past two years.

The team is friendly and highly motivated to improve the lives of people with dementia and their carers through research.

There is a trusting atmosphere within the team and the researchers have a lot of autonomy over their job role.

We encourage flexible working.

We know that a positive work/life balance brings about huge health-related benefits, which has a positive impact on the care we provide.

Please speak to us about flexible working, for example, home-working, part time hours, flexible start/finish times or anything else. If it works for you and works for the role, we'll do our best to make it happen.

The post-holder will support the follow up visits for the DETERMIND programme.

Starting in March 2024, the post holder will visit participants in their home, where they will lead an interview that covers topics including, but not limited to; healthcare services accessed, quality of life, health status and cognition.

There is also the potential for the Research Assistant to support the undertaking of systematic literature reviews that will inform the DETERMIND research areas as well as co-author publications produced from the study.

This will be an excellent project to be involved in if you have a desire to undertake a PhD or Clinical Doctorate in the future.
