Job summary:


DIT is the international economic department responsible for bringing together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment and help businesses succeed.

The department is currently working on four priority outcomes.

  • Securing world class Free Trade Agreements.
  • Championing the rules based international trading system.
  • Supporting UK businesses to take full advantage of trade opportunities to facilitate UK exports.
  • Delivering economic growth to all nations of the UK by attracting and retaining inward investment.


This is an important time to join the Department, as it is only several months into delivering a new export strategy and about to undergo an investment transformation programme.


The role sits within the English Regions Directorate, which is the face of DIT across England and has a central part to play in several key initiatives, including the Levelling Up agenda and the Government ambition of creating the UK as a Science and Technology Superpower.


Job description:


We are a talented and diverse regional team working with a range of partners across the world (internal and external) and industry bodies encouraging businesses to take advantage of the investment potential.

We work across a number of different priority sectors, however this is a business facing role and is responsible for attracting inward investment to the
Technology sector, by identifying, pursuing, and landing opportunities.


While the sector is broad it is increasingly focused on key sectors and segments including data infrastructure, cyber, AI and quantum feature heavily, with a focus on IP rich, R&D intensive businesses.

Objectives will need to be set and achieved within the UK and global operating context for the Government ambition of creating the UK as a Science and Technology Superpower.


Key accountabilities:


The NPH Investment Hub team works closely with overseas businesses, matching them to opportunities and supporting and advising them on setting up or expanding their business in the North.

This role will require you to work with both new and existing investors by:


  • Be expert and take personal leadership of the Technology sector portfolio: set and implement an operational strategy and Northern sector plan to achieve agreed objectives for inward investment in the sector and in priority markets, working with DIT's UK and global network and with local partner organisations.
  • International dealmaking: building client and sector relationships at a senior level, representing the Northern Tech brand in the UK and overseas to attract investors to the North.
  • Engagement with internal and external institutions: working with a range of Public and Private Partner organisations including the 11 northern Mayoral Combined Authorities (MCA) and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), Universities, Industry bodies, DIT Overseas and UK Sector Teams to showcase the core capabilities of NPH and connecting investors with industry contacts.
  • NPH sector propositions: manage and deliver with the team a portfolio of offers relevant to showcase NPH inward investment opportunities in Tech to communicate international value propositions helping to match investors and managing top projects/opportunities. This will also involve working with MCAs/LEPs, local institutions and thought leaders.
  • UK and overseas events: working with MCAs/LEPs and Northern Institutions to promote the NPH 'offer' at UK and overseas events to showcase the collective strengths and opportunities in the North to international investors.
  • Represent DIT NPH team: in engagements with businesses, with sector stakeholders across government and the private sector, and in support of Ministers, being a credible voice for HMG and for the sector. Helping to drive a culture of entrepreneurship, innovation, and continuous improvement across the DIT's NPH Team, wider Regional, UK and overseas Teams.

Hybrid working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.
