Overall Purpose

  • Take responsibility for the management of the Spinal speciality
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care.
  • To Manage and ensure that the provision of nursing care and maintaining high clinical standards is met
  • To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC/ HPC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Develop and manage a defined clinical area

Principal Accountabilities

Managerial

  • Participate in the advanced planning of all operating lists to ensure appropriate staff skills and equipment is available
  • To utilize resources effectively using evidence based best practice
  • Respond appropriately to unexpected events in order to maintain service delivery
  • Responsible for the safe use of expensive, highly complex equipment and ensuring the training of the team members in the use of this equipment
  • Contribute to the effective budget management of a departmental clinical area
  • To assist the Operating Rooms Manager in the business planning process, identifying specific issues
  • Stock checks/supplies ordering are carried out daily/ weekly/ monthly and discussed and agreed
  • Communicate with other wards and departments to ensure smooth running of lists
  • Organize own work and that of others, give direction to junior members of staff
  • Deploy staff over a 24 hours period to meet the needs of the area
  • Makes adjustments to cover emergency situations and staff sickness to maximize efficiency
  • Report the failure or mechanical problems of any items in line with Hospital Policy and arrange for repair or replacement of same in consultation with Management

Clinical and Technical

  • Manage the defined specialty and ensure staff carrying out procedures are appropriately trained to do so
  • Carry out individual patient care requirements
  • To develop, assess, plan, implement and evaluate programs of care in partnership with the patient and the multidisciplinary team
  • To promote health with all patient careers
  • Responsible for promoting comprehensive patient records in accordance with Hospital guidelines
  • Ensure confidentiality
  • To deliver governance standards in line with the Hospital's Governance framework
  • To respond to enquiries from relatives and careers, deal with concerns and actively problem solve to improve the patients experience
  • To audit quality of care to improve service and ensure standards are maintained
  • To facilitate an integrated approach to quality, against which performance can be measured
  • Manage a clinical speciality and take charge of the department in the absence of the Manager and Deputy Manager and the deployment of perioperative staff ensuring the correct skill mix is maintained over a 24 hour period to meet the needs of the service
  • To contribute and deliver the care strategy in the department

General

  • Provide and receive routine information using tact or persuasive skills with patients or clients as necessary
  • Maintain accurate and up to date documentation
  • Coordinates the clinical/managerial issues of the operating department on a day to day basis and deputizes for the Operating Room Manager when necessary
  • Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills, facilitate dealing with complex, sensitive and often contentious issues
  • Make judgments and decisions involving complex facts or situations which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options
  • Responsibilities in policy and service development in department and hospital
