Job summary:


  • You will be a part of the Chief Scientific Adviser's Office (CSAO) which sits at the heart of the Department's science community, supporting the Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) in all aspects of his work.
  • The Chief Scientific Advisers Office (CSAO) reaches across the Defra organisations, providing professional leadership and support to ensure science is at the heart of policy and advice. The teams lead on cross cutting science issues and bringing forward new and emerging science and technology across the Department.
  • Defra has an ambitious and broad remit that requires the better exploitation of data held across Defra organisations, government and academic communities. The CSAO, in partnership with Digital, Data Technology and Services (DDTS) is delivering the Data Analytics and Science Hub (DASH), a service for analysts and scientists that provides better access to data and a data science and analytics platform (the DASH platform) alongside skills and community development to support the delivery of high quality cross cutting analysis for Defra priorities (including Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment, Environment Land Management, Net Zero and across the Governmental 25 Year Environmental Plan targets). DASH will accelerate data sciencebased exploration and innovation for decision making and enable skills development for all scientists and analysts in Defra.
  • The DASH team works across all directorates and Defra organisations to build relationships across government, academia and wider communities.
  • You will lead the Communications and Community workstream, within the DASH team, bringing together expertise across science, geography, data engineering and analytical professions. This team works with stakeholders and potential users across Defra group to communicate information about the DASH service as well as the wider data science community to Defra group scientists and analysts, the data science community across government and beyond.

Job description:

As Data Science Communications Lead, you will be expected to:

  • Work in partnership with the DASH team to build collaborative relationships with stakeholders and potential users to communicate information about the DASH service as well as the wider data science community in Defra group and across government. There will be a particular focus on understanding and empathising with the user community to explore how they work and how DASH can support them.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive multichannel communications to support programme objectives.
  • Identify innovative solutions to help ensure our key audiences hear important messages including providing strategic briefings, communications materials and other resources that offer clear and consistent messages for use with stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain strong internal networks with other communications, programme and analytical teams to enhance the coherence and impact of DASH and data science engagement activity.
  • Develop visual reporting tools to share performance information and actionable insights from the evaluation of communications activities.
  • Use your science/ data science/geography/analytical background (or other relevant to Defra domain) background or experience to foster collaboration across the DASH service and data science communities.
  • Contribute to the delivery of activities across the wider DASH service, including supporting internal governance processes and developing data science products.

Person specification:

  • Strong communication skills, including managing relationships with delivery partners, and the development of visual communication aids.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to translate complex ideas into digestible and engaging content.
  • Experience in the use and evaluation of different channels both traditional and digital to engage people effectively.
  • Strong influencing skills and experience of working with senior leaders.
  • Experience of delivering effective communication strategies, being flexible and adaptive to uncover the underlying challenges and goals from key stakeholders.
