The Art Therapist is a member of the multi-disciplinary team responsible for accepting, prioritising and assessing referrals to the Service and offering specific psychotherapeutic interventions in the form of art therapy to service users in the geographical area of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin adult and inpatient mental health services.

This involves
individual, and group Art Psychotherapy work, along with other Psycho-Educational groups as required. This can entail the role of case holder.

They will be a senior clinical member of the Multidisciplinary Team, playing a key role in promoting and providing high quality Art psychotherapy treatment to people with a diagnosis of psychosis.


The post holder is a resource for the teams in relation to creative therapeutic interventions/approaches and including working with adults who can be difficult to engage.

This includes the processes of assessment, treatment, evaluation of therapeutic interventions, discharge and follow up; ensuring all practice is based on best practice theoretical model's which encompass research findings eg.

  • Provide assessment, Art psychotherapy interventions for people with psychosis (both for individual and group therapy) and may be 'hard to treat', and difficult to engage in other forms of psychological treatment.
  • Responsible for accepting, assessing and offering interventions for adults with complex communication and relationship difficulties.
  • Participates in service referral meetings and responds directly to referrals requiring follow up.
  • The provision of consultation, specialised advice, case support, clinical supervision and training are important on going elements of this post. Including working with colleagues from Early interventions, community mental health teams, rehab pathway
  • Develop specialist expertise working with people with psychosis, and target these assessments.
  • Ensures regular use of routine outcome measures.
  • Organises and plans therapeutic interventions with responsibility for reviewing, monitoring and evaluating outcomes.
  • Prepares reports, summaries and letters to relevant parties within the limits of professional confidentiality.
  • Responsible for providing advice and guidance on art therapy and creative methods of assessment and treatment to other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Works as case holder unless there is a conflict of interest between therapist/case holder roles.
  • Participate in multiagency meetings.
  • Participate in staff away days and team meetings when required.
  • Plan and organise own daily activities in line with service need
  • Provide a learning environment to support students (multidisciplinary) undergoing training and assist new and junior members of staff, peers and other disciplines to develop professional competence.
  • Researches and provides information in relation to evidence based practice and clinical effectiveness, particularly relating to key areas of expertise as appropriate to their own work. Integrates research and theory into practice.
  • May occasionally be required to undertake research on specific clinical issues/topics as agreed in local and wider service forums.
  • Maintains awareness of examples and evidence in relation to best practice and ongoing professional development.
  • Completes mandatory training as requested by the Trust.
  • Actively disseminate and implement all Trust policies, procedures, standards and guidance around infection control.
  • Supports the review and development of agreed specific clinic
