Befriending Volunteer
As little as a couple of hours a week could make a huge difference to a victim of domestic abuse.
If you are empathetic, compassionate and good at listening then becoming a volunteer for our Befriending Service may be the role for you.
Our Befrienders have a caseload of 4 service users and provide weekly phone calls to offer emotional support whilst they are on a waiting list for other LWA services.
This is a remote working role, which allows volunteers to be more flexible in their availability and volunteer from the comfort of their own home.
What skills do you need?
- Listening and the ability to communicate well with a variety of people is essential
- Punctuality, reliability and a commitment to volunteering
- Ability to empathise and be nonjudgmental
- Prior knowledge of domestic and/or sexual violence is desirable, but not essential as training is provided.
What commitment is required?
You must be able to complete weekly calls for 4 service users. Calls can be made any time Monday - Friday, between 9:00am - 5:00pm.
You would also be required to attend our monthly online Befriending volunteer team meetings, which are once a month on a Monday between 11:00am - 12:00pm.
What training is provided?
Training will be provided for all roles and you need to be able to commit to attending the training.
We provide a comprehensive set of training, including Domestic and Sexual Abuse Awareness, Safeguarding, DASH Risk Assessment, and Vicarious Trauma.
Training will be completed prior to you commencing your role as a volunteer. Further training opportunities to enhance your learning are provided throughout the year.
You will have the opportunity to shadow workers as part of your induction and regular support and supervision will be provided.
Our next training dates are on Monday 12th February and Monday 11th March 2024 and will be held in the Loughborough area of Leicestershire.
Would expenses be paid?
Travel and other out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed to all volunteers.
