Description

The post holder will be required to support the named nurse to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities to looked after children.

They will be responsible to and accountable within the managerial framework of the Trust.

At all times and in relation to the roles and responsibilities listed, work as a member of the Trust's looked after children health team.

As a Consultant Paediatrician with a defined role providing Looked After Children health assessments, the post holder will be working to Level 4 / 5 competencies as per the intercollegiate document

  • Looked after Children: roles and competencies of healthcare staff December 2020. Acquiring knowledge, skills and expertise in safeguarding/child protection including looked after children should be seen as a continuum. It is recognized that the post holder will increase skill and competence as they gain experience in the role.
  • Undertake health assessments for looked after children and provide written reports on the health of prospective carers as appropriate
  • Support and advise colleagues in the clinical assessment and care of children and young people, whilst being clear about others' personal clinical professional accountability
  • Liaise closely with other specialist services such as CAMHS, sexual health, and SEND services
  • Liaise with professionals from other agencies, such as education and children's social care
  • Advise local police, children's social care and other statutory and voluntary agencies on health matters with regard to individual looked after children
  • Ensure advice is available to the other professionals across the organisation on day today issues about looked after children and their families, including involvement in fostering and adoption panels according to local arrangements
  • Work closely with other specialist, named and designated looked after children professionals locally, and regionally and nationally
  • Encourage case discussion, reflective practice, and the monitoring of significant events at a local level
  • Work with named and designated looked after children professionals locally to agree and promote training needs and priorities
  • Be accountable to the Medical Director of the Trust
  • Report to the named nurse with primary responsibility for children's services and looked after children within the organisation
