    Job description:

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice. We provide support for the legal system across England and Wales, ensuring justice works for everyone.
Our justice system defends our fundamental rights and freedoms.

It is a cornerstone of our modern society and it must serve all those who call on it, when they call on it.

From some of the most vulnerable people in our society, to families in crisis, claimants and commercial businesses - we have a responsibility to deliver a Justice system that is accessible to everyone and operates efficiently.

As a Crown Court clerk you will play a vital role in our Justice system working in a unique and rewarding position, where you will be a key participant within a live Crown Court, however we appreciate this role is not for everyone.

It is a unique position at the heart of justice, which requires you to have high emotional resilience and be able to understand and be sensitive to many, sometimes difficult, issues and take a non-judgmental approach to our service users.

We are looking for confident communicators; people who are able to speak publicly and have the self-assurance to confidently liaise with the Judge, the defence, prosecution, media, members of the public and more, regarding complex and sensitive matters in a calm and professional manner.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have experience of effectively managing your time, working in a complex environment under pressure and to targets, able to produce time critical court orders and to record hearing outcomes accurately and efficiently.

You will be an active part of a clerking team to ensure the smooth running of all the crown courts sitting daily and to maximise judicial sitting time and will ensure the appropriate codes of conduct are applied to the courtroom and other areas of the court premises whilst the court is sitting and to actively intervene where required and encourage compliance.

Learning quickly, being able to adapt at short notice and having a high level of attention is essential as you will be taking verdicts and conducting arraignments amongst many other duties.

We are constantly investing in digital solutions to allow us to improve the way we deliver the justice people deserve in today's world, so it is imperative that you are IT proficient and able to adapt to new systems and technologies.

This role gives you the opportunity to make a difference in HMCTS and gives you the benefits of working within the Civil Service.
