About the Role:


Head of Communications


Responsible for setting up an external communications function within SSP UK & Ireland and work hand in hand with the Internal Communications Manager to improve and enhance how we communicate and engage with our colleagues.

You will be responsible for developing and implementing the UK & Ireland communications strategy, ensuring it is consistent with the Group (global) strategy.

This will include media relations, social media, (low level) public affairs and working with our new Head of Sustainability to develop a compelling sustainability narrative for our clients and other key stakeholders (NGOs).

You will oversee managing agencies and a small team of one direct report, so you will need to be comfortable rolling up your sleeves to get the job done.


External Communications (including Public Affairs)

  • Develop proactive PR strategy to include how we maximise coverage of new openings, job creation, multicultural and generational environment


  • UK trade PR

  • UK specific trades
  • UK issues/ crisis comms lead
  • Lead development/ management of UK website
  • Lead SSP UK social media feeds
  • Take part in relevant UK trade bodies
  • Manage PR agency

Internal Communications

  • Lead IC manager in working together to develop and IC strategy and framework for the UK&I business, including key messages, toolkits to support set piece announcements, channel development forward looking calendar, etc.


  • Drive channel development

  • Teams, SP and Viva Engage as we roll out these tools to our Front Line Workers
  • Draft CEO scripts/ presentations for internal events (Conferences and Town Halls)
  • Overall responsibility for all internal events (i.e. Annual Conference)
  • Manage IC manager

Other areas of focus

  • Develop narrative around UK sustainability strategy and plan
  • Actively manage Macmillan and/or other charity partnerships
  • Non-Government Organisation engagement as required.
  • Support the Business Development teams to maximise organisational strengths
  • Showcase partnership and employer brand for SSP

Key skills:


  • Strong critical thinking and planning skills to develop and implement effective internal communication campaigns and programmes
  • Ability to digest information quickly and meet tight timeframes across several projects
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner
  • Proven track record to think creatively and develop innovative content that speaks to, and gains traction with, target audiences
  • Strong interpersonal and relationshipbuilding building skills, who can work effectively with colleagues at all levels
  • Knowledge of a variety of internal communications channels, ideally the Microsoft platforms including Teams and Yammer
  • Strong analytical and datadriven decision making skills and able to measure the effectiveness of projects and make recommendations for improvement
  • A passion for 'the colleague voice'
