The role
We have an exciting and rare opportunity for a Planner (Pre Construction) to join our established team.

We have an exceptional pipeline with recent projects consisting of road schemes, bridge works, public realm, reservoirs and general civil engineering schemes based predominantly in the North West with a value from £1m to £10m.

Reporting to the Managing Estimator you will be an integral part of the preconstruction team.


Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead the development of the planning / programming activity within the pre-construction team to enhance our ability to secure works and to establish project controls and internal reporting from the tender stage.
  • Ensure project delivery programmes are fully developed and contractually compliant.
  • If circumstances require, to regularly progress programmes such that divergences are identified early to steps to be taken promptly to mitigate delay, notify Client or protect entitlement.
The role will involve close liaison with Project Teams, plus occasional liaison with Client and Supply Chain as necessary.


What you'll be doing:


  • Produce tender stage programmes working alongside the estimators, with a focus on ensuring we submit our most competitive offer.
  • Create, manage, update and maintain an internal report detailing progress of all live projects against baseline and report back to the Senior Management Team.
  • Liaise with Project Teams to update programmes based on progress to date to protect entitlement, mitigate delay and notify client where necessary.
  • Develop and manage project programmes such that they are contractually compliant and updated / issued in line with contract requirements.
  • Hold and maintain 'master' copies where necessary.
  • Where Compensation Events / Variations are identified, liaise with Project Teams and Commercial to ensure that entitlement is demonstrated within any submission made; provide planning / programming input to do so.
  • Provide highlevel programme extracts to Project Teams for delivery and reporting purposes, including: two / four week look ahead; phased / sectional views; design / subcontractor / packagespecific extracts; procurement of suppliers / subcontractors, and; third party interfaces, etc.
  • Contribute to discussion on phasing, approach and methodology of works on site.
  • Review postcontract performance of projects with the Project Team.

About You


Aligned to our ethos and values, you will be an integral part of our team who is passionate about Civil Engineering and has experience across multiple Civil Engineering disciplines.


Ideally you'll have:


  • Appropriate industry qualification, e.g. HND or NVQ
  • Industry background and experience working as a planner ideally in excess of 5 years experience in a civil engineering environment
  • Appropriate IT skills including the use of company software packages. (ASTA Powerproject mandatory, Primvera P6 preferred, Microsoft Project)
  • Understanding and appreciation of the requirements on NEC3 / 4 Contracts and the importance of programme to management of the project as a whole, including timescales for action.
  • Construction knowledge, ability to research and appraise viability of alternatives.
  • Clear, concise oral and written communications, internally and externally.
  • Information management skills.
  • Ability to quickly digest information.
  • Ability to motivate and influence people.
  • Time management skills.
  • Decision making and problem solving within extent of personal responsibility.
