About the role

Design Management Technical Lead is responsible for the development and implementation of design strategy (within the emerging Energy sector) across the Regional business unit.


  • Strategic Development of the design management process and design partner relationships. This will include an alignment between the approach to developing methodology and design solutions for projects within the energy sector.
  • To ensure the integration, technical assurance, compliance, health, safety and sustainability of the design and engineering construction to enable compliant defect free handover for operational service, delivered to programme and budget.

What you'll be doing

As a Design Management Technical Lead you will:

  • Represent Regional Scotland on all Group and UKCS design forums (relevant to the energy sector and related projects) to ensure compliant and consistent delivery of all design and technical related matters
  • Lead the Regional energy design team ensuring compliant and consistent design delivery
  • Ensure all projects from inception (workwinning) through to site delivery received a consistent and compliant energy design offer.
  • Develop a project energy design compliance checklist and audit as required.
  • Identify all competency and training requirements for Regional energy design team members and organise / facilitate internal and external training, as required.
  • Regularly liaise with Regional Digital Lead to ensure the energy design offer is compliant with all digital requirements.
  • Regularly liaise with Civils and Building Design Management (DM) community to ensure the Regional energy design offer is compliant with all relevant DM requirements.
  • Regularly liaise with Quality and Performance Lead to ensure the Regional energy design offer is compliant with all relevant Quality requirements.
  • Liaise with Operations / project teams to ensure they have a full understanding of energy design and associated procedures and provide training and instruction as required such that all energy design related requirements are met.
  • Liaise with Regional Document Control Lead to ensure compliant and consistent CDE / project document delivery.
  • Report directly to Technical Services Director.

You will also:

  • Ensure compliance with the Group Minimum Engineering Expectations;
  • Support the Tender or attend the Tender handover;
  • Technically appraise the Contract documentation in comparison to the Tender;
  • Manage all technical Queries or Requests for Information for timely issue and response;
  • Implement Technical Change as required;
  • Produce Design Briefs to meet design requirements in support of Designer Services procurement;
  • Implement Designer competency assessments;
  • Ensure that proposed Designers have been accepted by the Client prior to commencement (as
required);

  • Obtain & manage risk in accordance with the CDM regulations;
  • Support the production of Design Management Plans as required
  • Ensure provision of an agreed design delivery programme that meets with construction needs;
  • Maintain, manage and update the Design Submissions & Approvals register;
Manage all 3rd party consents to meet contract requirements, maintaining the Consents Register;

  • Ensure all associated design interfaces are identified and managed;
  • Implement Design Start Up meetings with each design consultant;
  • Chair and manage regular Design Review meetings with Designer and Client;
  • Maintain a robust document control of all technical documentation and information;
  • Ensure that the design created suits the methodology adopted for construction;
  • Ensure involvement of stakeholders and construction input during design review meetings;
  • Manage the appropriate action and response to any reviewer comments;
  • Gain full approval of the designs from all approving authorities;
  • Manage interfaces with all temporary works designs as required by the Temporary Works Coordinator;
  • Before construction commencement to ensure that design documentation has been approved;
  • Implement a design hand over to the construction team.

Who we're looking for

Personal Qualities and Experience:

  • Proven experience at a senior level in delivering design services, within a Work Winning environment.
  • Proven experience at a senior level in delivering design services, within a live project delivery setting.
  • Experience of successfully implementing design strategies and experience of large complex Major Projects is required;
  • Leadership skills in a matrix organisation are required to deliver design services in a timely manner with a customer and Sector specific focus;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners under time pressure;
  • Will know 'what good looks like' in bid submissions and work winning and have hands on experience of delivering efficient design on a project in a timely manner;
