What you'll be doing

The role would be suited to:

  • Those with a science or technical background with an interest in food
  • As a handson role it's also suited to those with food skills (catering or food production) with an interest in science
  • It could be a move into a more technical role for those from a logistics (warehouse or similar) background who show a real interest in what we do.
This is an interesting area of work with a wide variety of tasks:

  • Working to the required safety and quality standards in a laboratory
  • Working with chemical contaminants to produce materials for testing
  • Using machinery and instruments, from handheld blenders to industrial mixers and mills
  • Preparing, storing and delivering a wide variety of samples to tight deadlines
  • Maintaining a clean working environment
  • Logging in samples on a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • General duties: record keeping, stocking consumables, emptying waste, cleaning


The post will involve manual handling, standing for prolonged periods, walking across site to deliver samples and working in cold environments for which Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided; you will need to be clean shaven for work for some PPE.

We work with food and feed samples of all types and this includes allergens and raw and cooked meat. Work is in a lab and contaminants are used.

  • Scientific knowledge or experience of working with food, animal feed or a background in catering or practical logistics would be beneficial
  • An understanding of compliance with Quality Systems accreditation criteria would be ideal
