Description
Do you have enthusiasm, a sense of adventure and passion for wildlife conservation, eager to conduct pollinator surveys across Scotland and contribute to the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme? If yes, then keep reading

The UK PoMS team is looking for one or more self-employed field surveyors to conduct pollinator surveys and introduce volunteers to around ten 1 km square sites across Scotland, between mid-April and mid-September 2023.

PoMS aims to recruit volunteers to carry out surveys on as many of our sample squares as possible; this part-time post is to support and train those volunteers, and to carry out the surveys where volunteers are not available.

Main responsibilities:

  • Conduct pollinator surveys of insects (using pan traps and Flower-Insect Timed Counts) and habitats (using flower counts) once per month at each PoMS square
  • Liaise with landowners from whom access permission has already been obtained
  • Introduce new volunteers where relevant and liaise with existing volunteers in a mentoring role
  • Enter survey data via an online form on the PoMS website
  • Contribute to promotion of UK PoMS and recruitment of potential volunteers
Here are some essential skills we are looking for:

  • Ability to identify flower-visiting insects to at least group level (distinguishing bumblebees from solitary bees, for example) and to identify commonly occurring flowering plants to species level
  • Proven experience in remote outdoor environments
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, especially when organising surveys in often unpredictable weather conditions
  • Experience of working with volunteers
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to remote field sites using your own vehicle
  • Registered selfemployed status. As a selfemployed contractor you will be asked to complete our supplier due diligence questionnaire in order to be paid as an external supplier. We would expect you to complete a tax selfassessment as per the HMRC guidelines.
UK PoMS has been running since 2017, further information can be found here
