Band C £25,702 - £27,938 or Band D £31,931- £34,709 per Annum (dependent on experience) This role may also attract an RRA of up to £2000 dependent on experience

The STFC Cryogenics and Magnetics Group is under the Applied Science Division of the Technology Department.

The Technology Department, provides advanced technology and engineering in support of both STFC funded activities and other high profile internationalprojects.


The Cryogenics and Magnetics Group provides world leading cryogenic and engineering solutions in support of space-based and ground-based cosmology, astronomy and Earth observation, and also superconducting magnets in support of international particle physicsexperiments at accelerators and light sources.


The Group works very closely with international research institutes, such as the European Space Agency (ESA) and CERN, and also with international aerospace organisations such as Thales Alenia Space and Airbus.


The mission involvement is built upon basic research and development in cryocooler technology which brings together a wide range of scientific, engineering and technical disciplines.


The role:


Essential:


  • Desirable:
  • Prior or background knowledge or experience in the following areas is not essential, as that is expected to be developed as an ongoing part of the role, but some experience in some of these areas would be advantageous, with commensurate salary recognition

Desirable:

- working with cryogenic or magnetic systems
- assembly of complex mechanical/electrical/control systems
- assembling/working with vacuum and fluidic systems
- assembling/working with very high precision mechanisms
- working in a clean room environment
- machining and working with hand tools
- brazing/soldering small and precision items
- an understanding and ability to interpret technical/manufacturing drawings and metrology reports
- an ability to understand and follow complex manufacture, assembly and test procedures
- a broad understanding of manufacturing techniques and processes as applied to general R&D
- working with standard laboratory equipment
- an awareness of health and safety aspects of carrying out work in the disciplines listed above
