A 12 month secondment exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced social worker to join one of our inpatient medium secure multi-disciplinary teams.

As an advanced social worker, you will lead in the provision of in-patient social care and play a key role in the forensic pathway managed by the Behavioural and Developmental Psychiatry Clinical Academic Group.

This role is for Norbury ward - Clinical decision unit
- in River House which is at the Bethlem Royal Hospital. You will be the allocated social worker for the unit which comprises of 15 beds. You will be expected to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, taking part in scheduled meetings and liaising with partner agencies on behalf of the trust in your role as social worker.

The post holder will be an individual with demonstrable post graduate social work experience.

As an advanced social work practitioner, you will be able to use social work values and principles with the rights and strength based approaches to offer an effective service to promote the rights of these service users.

We are looking for energetic, optimistic, passionate and dynamic social workers with a high degree of commitment to this client group along with excellent assessment and report writing skills.


Experience of working with mentally disordered offenders would be an advantage, along with AMHP training, BIA training, a very good understanding of the safeguarding process or SAM (Safeguarding Adult's Manager) training and experience or training as a serious Incident investigator.

The post-holder will join the highly skilled social work team at River House and work collaboratively with experienced multi-disciplinary professionals in SLaM and across the South London Partnership (SLP).

Social workers are integral within this service delivery framework and they are key in the co-ordination of the internal transition and discharge of patients back into the community.

You have a dedicated scope in promoting social work values and have the responsibility for leading on safeguarding, risk management and discharge planning.


The Trust is committed to promoting research and development and works jointly with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) which provides support and advice to staff and students who would like to undertake research in SLaM.


  • To provide a comprehensive social work assessments, engagement and treatment to mentally disordered offenders presenting with complex clients with offending behaviour linked to mental illness and / or personality disorder.
  • To undertake social care responsibilities in accordance with the care act and advice the multidisciplinary team members accordingly.
  • To contribute to the multidisciplinary assessment and management of risk, analysing complex facts or situations, developing management strategies and providing direction to other team members.
  • To liaise with referrers, community teams and other agencies to ensure good communication and effective discharge planning through exercising professional judgement in sharing information balancing patients' rights with victims' rights and in line with local and national policies.
  • To assess the social care needs of a defined, highly complex client group, establishing and evaluating appropriate interventions in partnership with health, local authority and criminal justice agencies.
  • To support Community teams and Local Authority partners in their duties when carrying out social care needs assessments or agreeing personalised packages of care and support under the care act
  • To attend regular social work supervision with the Head of Social work and be part of the Trust's performance management scheme.
  • To work proactively with multidisciplinary colleagues to support the nursing team leader in their role of ensuring the smooth running of the unit.
  • To provide detailed, succinct, wellpresented reports, containing critical information to statutory reviews under the Care Programme Approach, evidence to Associate Hospital Managers Hearings, Mental Health Tribunals, the Ministry of Justice and Parole Board Hearings.
