Description

The post will also give exposure to high volume cataract surgery (complex and simple cataract surgery), glaucoma filtration surgery and glaucoma clinics.

The appointee will be supervised and remain under the responsibility of the named consultant, Mr Abdul Jabbar Khan (Consultant Ophthalmic/ Glaucoma Surgeon) The job will also provide an opportunity for the appointed doctor to continue his/her professional development and improve the clinical and surgical skills at the Lincoln County Hospital.

The doctor is expected to participate fully in the department's annual audit programme and is encouraged to attend relevant educational sessions and conferences.


  • The appointee will be allocated two supervised and dedicated theatre sessions a week and will be encouraged to further develop intraocular surgical skills.
  • To gain sub-speciality exposure in glaucoma
  • To be able to reach a general level of competence and professional maturity in the glaucoma and cataract surgery to act as a general ophthalmologist
  • To gain exposure in glaucoma filtration surgery.
  • To achieve competence with glaucoma laser treatment and post-operative filtration surgery management such as antimetabolite injections, suturelysis and needling.
  • To gain experience in biometry (IOL Master) and A scan
  • To be able to manage common ophthalmic emergencies through regular participation in the Rapid Access clinics and by taking part in the junior on call rota.
  • Under consultant supervision, the appointee will be expected to manage common ophthalmic conditions.
  • The appointee will have the opportunity to teach visiting medical students in a clinic setting and run short tutorials.
  • The appointee will be expected to participate in departmental research projects and teaching. General administration/protected research time will be provided.
  • He/she is invited to attend the once monthly planned care meetings.
  • The post will undergo annual appraisal and revalidation

The Appointee will be expected, in conjunction with his/her colleagues and under consultant supervision, to provide a high quality emergency ophthalmic service supporting the provision of an effective countywide service.

He/she will support the continued delivery of a first class ophthalmic service.

He/she will be expected to carry out teaching duties as required and take an active part in the Postgraduate Medical Education programme.

He/she will be involved in the delivery of clinical undergraduate teaching to students from Nottingham and Leicester Medical Schools.

He/she will be required to play an active part in the robust clinical audit programme in operation within the Department and to take part in regional and national audits.

He/she will be required to report all critical incidents and attend and support the Departmental audit and Clinical Governance meetings.

He/she will be expected to take part in the first on call rota with the junior trainees.
