Job summary:

Thank you for your interest in this Assistant Private Secretary role.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) sits at the heart of the criminal justice system, working with partners to help keep the public safe.

We deal with criminal cases at every level - including burglary, terrorism, domestic abuse and multi-million pound fraud cases.

We also work across borders to tackle cybercrime, human trafficking and drugs smuggling, and use our powers to confiscate the proceeds of crime at home and abroad.

We are constantly adapting to the changing crime landscape and to wider issues affecting the criminal justice system and the country as a whole.

So, for example, our current priorities include helping us improve how we engage with victims and witnesses, further progress on rape and sexual offences, and ongoing operational recovery from the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

Private Office sits at the heart of the CPS and works closely with all other corporate functions and with operational functions locally, nationally, and internationally to support delivery of CPS objectives.

Private Office also works closely with counterparts in other Government Departments, principally with the Attorney General's Office (AGO) in its superintendence role, and with operational criminal justice partners domestically and overseas.

Within Private Office there are four functions, led by the Principle Private Secretary (PPS), relating to Private Secretary support, corporate governance, complaints and correspondence, and business support.

The Private Secretary/Head of Private Office provides management and leadership to the Private Secretary team.

This team is responsible for ensuring that a high-quality private secretary service is delivered to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and this includes a fundamental role in ensuring a consistent, reliable, and effective conduit for the decisions, views, priorities, and objectives of the DPP and CEO.

We would love to hear from forward-looking, strategic thinking, and collaborative applicants who share our values and our passion for delivering justice to the public we serve.

Please note, it is desirable if the post holder has the following experience:

  • Strong organisational and administrative skills

  • To communicate clearly, whilst recognising the confidential and sensitive nature of the work of the Private Office and the need to be discreet when dealing with sensitive/high profile issues.
  • To ensure that the DPP/CEO time is coordinated and managed effectively, highlighting any pressure points to the Head of Private Office and Diary Secretary.
  • Develop strong and trusted relationships with CPS teams across the organisation and external stakeholders, working strategically to ensure that the DPP/CEO have all of the advice and information required to make wellinformed, robust decisions.
  • Ensure timely briefing and policy advice is provided to the DPP/CEO, using agreed templates with clear objectives and interventions/lines to take provided in advance.
