The Role & Responsibilities:

This is a core role inside both the Group Risk function and across the wider Bank.

Reporting to the Group Director of Operational Risk and Assurance, the role holder will ensure that the Bank's Operational Risk management framework is designed and operating effectively, and work with stakeholders across the bank to ensure effective collaboration and oversight for operational risks.


The role holder will assume responsibility for delivery of key Group Risk obligations including embedding Operational Risk effectively across 1st and 2nd lines of defence, managing the Operational Risk requirements within the Bank's ICAAP, and oversight of the Bank's Internal Control framework, as well as the Operational Risk Appetite.

This will be a leadership role, and the role holder will need to lead and drive the Operational Risk team (approx. 4 people) to deliver against agreed objectives.

Collaboration across our business areas and within the Group Risk team will be essential for success, to ensure that we leverage the use of data and technology to improve our oversight of Operational Risk, with the implementation of a new GRC tool in 2023.


Customer Focus

  • Ensure the Operational Risk function supports the Bank's customer facing areas to accurately identify and manage operational risks when products and services are created and distributed, through secure and available systems which deliver fair customer outcomes.

Strategy and Planning

  • Challenge and contribute to the development of short, medium and longterm strategies (including action plans and targets) for the Operational Risk function, in line with the defined vision, mission, risk appetite and objectives of the Bank.
  • Challenge and monitor Operational Risk appetite metrics that form the basis of monthly reporting to Execlevel management committees, including oversight of action plans that arise metrics out of appetite
  • Review and challenge current ways of working and processes/interactions with stakeholders across 1st / 2nd line to improve collaboration and efficiency, including the use of data and technology

Regulatory Compliance

  • Set and maintain robust standards and practice for regulatory compliance throughout the delivery of the Operational Risk function's key obligations and initiatives, dealing with any issues promptly and appropriately.
  • Implement strong standards and practice in terms of conduct for staff and compliance with the PRA/FCA's Statements of Principles and Code of Practice.
  • Ensure that the Operational Risk function's expectations for levels of professional conduct and integrity and ethical values are respected throughout the delivery of its key obligations and initiatives, promote good behaviour setting an example in this regard.

Risk Management Framework

  • Lead the delivery of the Bank's framework for operational risk management and controls and ensure this is implemented effectively across the Bank, in line with the Board's risk appetite.
  • Own the assessment of Operational Risk as one of the Bank's principal risks and ensure it is monitored, managed and controlled effectively and reported to Execlevel Risk Committee, using appropriate internal controls aligned to Board risk appetite.
