Do you have excellent analytical skills and hold a professional accounting qualification (or work towards one)? Do you want to work in a research and innovation-focused environment? If so, this full-time ongoing position could be ideal.


In this role, you will provide an accurate and timely post-award management service to academics holding research innovation grants and contracts to ensure that projects are managed within the university's financial regulations and the financial terms and conditions of funding bodies.

A key element of your role will be to ensure that research innovation income is maximised through claims and invoicing and that the risk of reduced claim and exchange rate or other losses is minimised.


As Assistant Accounts Officer (Research Innovation Finance), you will:

  • Create and maintain timely and accurate project records on the university's finance system
  • Lead on all stakeholder interface work (notably with PIs, Finance colleagues and funders) for individual projects in the assigned portfolio of projects in accordance with the Research Innovation Finance MoU
  • Authorise and control expenditure to ensure costs (including staff appointments) are within project budgets
  • Maintain an uptodate finance activity planner/tracker for respective projects within the assigned portfolio of projects at all times as a basis for organised portfolio management
  • Provide timely financial reports and monitoring to award holders and Divisions and accurate financial claims and reports to funding bodies
  • Provide guidance, advice and support through regular liaison with divisional Directors of Operations, Principal Investigators and divisional administrators to facilitate robust postaward and financial management

To be successful in this role, you will have/be:

  • A professional accounting qualification such as AAT, or working towards and GCSE English and Maths or equivalent
  • A good working knowledge of financial systems such as Unit4 Business World
  • An ability to work on multiple projects, manage time effectively, and determine relative priorities to meet deadlines
  • A high degree of numeracy and confidence with figures
