We have an exciting opportunity for a
Forensic Linguist to join our
Humanities and Social Science Team within Dstl's Exploration Division.


This role will see you working within the team to prepare and deliver focused research and experimental activities, identifying and incorporating the lessons learnt.

A key part of the role is taking a driving role in nurturing a linguistics capability within Dstl and supporting wider capability development with our external academic, industry and wider government partners.

The successful applicant will be expected to take on the role of Technical Partner; working with wider UK Science and Technology community to provide advice and technical oversight to externally delivered research and ensuring it is integrated into Dstl's wider research programme outcomes.

Job description:


In this role you will:


  • Lead and conduct high quality and technically robust research activities drawing on your forensic linguistics and language analysis expertise ensuring its technical quality and maximising value added.
  • Work collaboratively as part of multi
- and inter-disciplinary teams and with partners (e.g. within industry, academia and on an international scale) to deliver innovative and effective solutions to our customers' problems and to ensure analytical products and outputs are fit for purpose.

  • Manage technical work conducted by our suppliers to deliver high technical quality research.
  • Lead / provide support to planning and conducting trials and experimentation, as well as analyse language related data produced.
  • Provide timely, impartial, evidencebased advice to projects, across Government and MoD, this may include briefing senior officials to ensure robust decision making within Government.
  • Align your research with overall programme objectives and seek opportunities for collaboration and exploitation with complementary research being conducted elsewhere in the research programmes; ensuring coherence of advice to customers and maximum value for money for Defence and Security.
  • Though this role has no formal line responsibility, you will also lead more junior staff in the successful delivery of products, as well as provide technical or professional guidance and mentorship.
  • Work with internal and external customers to identify requirements and opportunities for forensic linguistics and language analysis.
  • Report results of analysis in different formats and styles according to audience requirements, including verbal briefings to customers and partners at all levels of seniority.
  • Work within multi
- and inter-disciplinary project teams and in a team based at Dstl Portsdown West. This role will require some travel to other Dstl sites and Defence / Government locations in the UK, and there may also be some international travel required.


Person specification:


We are looking for someone who has:

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and in multi
- and inter-disciplinary teams.

  • The ability to build strong working relationships with a broad range of individuals including military and nonmilitary stakeholders.
  • Experience of using technical consultancy skills to successfully scope, manage and deliver against customer requirements.
  • Experience in leading the delivery of technical work, this may include assuring and overseeing the work of others, to ensure high impact research is delivered.
  • The ability to adapt to changing requirements.
  • A sharp, enquiring mind with the ability to think laterally, and the qualities of judgement and probity to provide sound impartial advice.
  • A desire to share their enthusiasm for, and knowledge about, language and play an active role in capability development initiatives.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training to a range of audiences.
  • Good sense of selfawareness and preparedness to act on their own development needs and a willingness to upskill in emerging areas.
