  • Job descriptionAs a Senior Technical Specialist, you will use your substantial technical knowledge and experience to guide the organisation and external stakeholders on complex, and reputationally and politically sensitive issues where hydrology is a factor. Working with colleagues in other teams and externally you will influence local policy and the decisions of nonhydrologists, hydrologists, and management both within the Environment Agency and externally, ensuring they are based on technically sound evidence and good practice.

You will undertake analysis and evaluation of complex hydrological problems including contributing to drought management and the development and use of numerical models for informing solutions to water resources issues.

You will provide technical leadership to a small team of hydrologists within Wessex.

Part of that role will involve working with the team leader and internal and external hydrology community to build capability and resilience in the hydrology service and identify, develop, and implement new ways of working.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.


  • The team
  • Hydrology forms part of the Groundwater, Hydrology and Contaminated Land Team in Wessex. The Hydrology part of the team provides technical expertise and advice on water resource management and regulation across the Area. This includes important issues such as no deterioration of watercourses under the Water Framework Directive, Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies, the Water Industry National Environment Programme, water company water resource management plans, drought plans and restoring sustainable abstractions and determining water resources licences.
  • Experience/skills required
  • Highly experienced and technically expert professional with extensive understanding of hydrology and water resources.
  • Experience of leading people. This may have been achieved through line management, management or technical leadership roles.
  • You will be able to communicate well and effectively across a wide network of audiences, having the skills to turn technical detail into compelling argument and influence your respective audience.
  • Ability to deliver results through others by managing talent, coaching, and mentoring
  • Be a champion for innovation and best practice to add value and to achieve more for the environment
  • Ability to translate organisational ambition into strategic and tactical plans and programmes for delivery in an operational environment.
  • Technical resilience planning
  • You will be educated to at least degree standard (or equivalent), in a relevant scientific discipline. Chartered status is desirable.


You will also need to carry out site visits and travel between offices.- Contact and additional information-You will be required to have a Full UK Driving Licence.

The role can be based at either our Blandford, Bridgwater or Exeter Offices, with flexible home working included. As a dispersed team, there is an occasional need to travel.
