The role


Reporting to the Head of Communications and Media, the Press and Communications Officer will be responsible for using the media to tell our members' stories and generate coverage which will advance Community's industrial goals.


The Press and Communications Officer will be passionate about advancing workers' rights and giving our members a voice in a crowded public debate.

They will enjoy developing and placing impactful stories, managing relationships with the press, and maintaining Community's profile in the media.


They will work with union colleagues from across sectors and regions to articulate our communications with members, the media, and the wider public through press releases and briefings, opinion pieces, website stories, guidance, and printed literature.


Responsibilities will encompass:


  • Working with the union's Head of Communications and Media to develop a press strategy that advances Community's industrial and political goals through proactive and reactive press activity.
  • Developing your existing network of press contacts and influencers to ensure Community generates a high volume of impactful media coverage that furthers our industrial and policy agendas.
  • Generate news coverage that advances our recruitment, engagement and mobilisation efforts across sectors and regions.
  • Have your finger on the pulse of media that is relevant to our work and lead our rapid response efforts this may include out of hours.
  • Coordinate and write website news and blog content including the sourcing and production of excellent quality, relevant and engaging stories for the website.
  • Edit, pitch, and write pieces on behalf of the union and senior officials.
  • Ensure strict external messaging through; support and training for spokespeople, briefing documents and collaboration with senior colleagues across the organisation.
  • Communicate internally across the union to ensure all union staff are abreast of the union's communications and press activity, and future opportunities.
  • Utilise the union's social media platforms to ensure written content has as wide an audience as possible.
  • Study the evolving needs of our members and activists and create excellent printed literature to support those needs by working in collaboration with the union's regions and departments.

Skills and requirements

  • At least two years of experience of working with the media at both a national and regional level
  • Excellent communication skills and news sense, particularly the ability to write clearly and effectively for a range of audiences
  • Good understanding of the UK media landscape and social media platforms
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to maintain contact databases and communication planning and
  • High attention to detail, with excellent proofreading skills with the ability to draft media releases and newsletter and website content as required
  • Experience with prioritising work in a time pressured environment

Job Types:
Full-time, Permanent


Salary:
£35,000.00-£38,000.00 per year
