The Animal Plant Health Agency (APHA) is a Government agency that sits within the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.


Job description:

You will be working in a friendly and supportive team in a fast paced, reactive and varied role.


You will need to have excellent IT and organisation skills and the flexibility to turn your hand to different tasks as the situation demands.


The position is customer facing and will suit those who have an ability to communicate well to a diverse group of customers.


You will be engaging with a broad range of partners and forming relationships with colleagues across the wider Defra team.


Main duties will include but are not limited to the following:


Performance Management:


  • To take responsibility for the team and its output.
  • Achieve goals through the team ensuring capability via coaching and training.
  • Tackle poor performance and reward and recognise good performance.

Target delivery:


  • Ensure work is delivered on
- time and at the required level

  • Raise issues as and when appropriate.
  • When targets are in jeopardy liaise with the management to highlight this.

Leading change:


  • Ensuring that those within the team are kept informed of relevant process changes and the reasons for them.
  • Ensure that the team are up skilled and can implement new ways of working and do so effectively.
  • Provide support to the senior management team and show commitment to APHA.

Administrative support:


  • Supervising the delivery of various administrative duties to the immediate and when required wider team.
  • Ensuring accurate records are kept and updated accordingly.
  • Ensuring actions are carried out in accordance with the procedures and within the necessary timescales
  • Providing support and guidance to others (internally and externally) on procedures and practices

Responding to emergencies:


  • Is flexible to adapt to changing situations and responds with energy and commitment to take on additional tasks that may be outside the normal day to day duties.
  • Motivates those in their team to respond to changing demands, providing support and guidance
The post holder may be occasionally required to work from other locations in the Delivery Area.
