Job description:


For centuries, our Armed Forces have managed an in-house postal service, delivering mail throughout our military history including both World Wars.

The British Forces Post Office provides postal and courier services to the UK Armed Forces and is a renowned brand across Defence.

You will be based in our purpose-built headquarters at RAF Northolt.


You will ensure that the Armed Forces mail is handled in a secure, safe, and timely fashion and be responsible for ensuring the correct receipt, sortation, and dispatching of all types of mail in a secure, logical, and methodical manner.

You will undertake a wide variety of daily tasks with a good mixture of physical and desk-based work including, data inputting, sorting, and processing mail, and loading vehicles ready for dispatch.


This role will provide you with a good opportunity to expand your experience using cargo X-ray machines and gaining skills and qualifications such as Civil Aviation Authority Air Cargo Security training.

You will be part of large, dedicated team with an abundance of progression and development opportunities both within the team and the wider organisation.


Please be aware this role will require you to be on site full time, Monday to Friday 07:00 - 15:00.

In addition to the salary, you will also receive allowances of £3250 including Outer London Weighting and RAF Northolt RRA

This is a fixed term role with the potential to become permanent at the end of contract.


Responsibilities

  • Maintain procedures in accordance with mail handling standards and processes set by British Forces Post Office and Royal Mail.
  • Maintain workplace safety standards, responsible for your own safety and safety of your colleagues.
  • Undertake mail security screening procedures and once trained become an X-Ray machine operator.
  • Effectively utilise local video encoding systems, to ensure accurate item sort and mail compliance requirements are always achieved.
  • Use a combination of bespoke IT, handheld and manual systems, create and maintain mail dispatch schedules following correct consignment and regulatory processes.
  • Act as the driver's escort, completing timely delivery of mail in accordance with instructions and security regulations.
  • Ensure accurate and secure redirection, location, trace, and personal verification of mail using both computer and local systems.
  • Routinely conduct basic operating procedures on an automated mail sorting machine including basic daily maintenance and cleaning of the equipment.
  • Always adhere to all British Forces Post Office and Civil Aviation Security requirements and maintain the security of British Forces Post Office mail. You will be required to adhere to personal security arrangements, complete annual security training and will be required to carry appropriate issued ID whilst at work.

Person specification:


  • Demonstrable use of manual handling equipment, with the ability to lift mail items up to 11kg unaided, 30kg assisted, and working collaboratively with others to move heavier items
It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following desirable criteria:

  • Experience of working in warehouse, mail handling or logistics environment
  • X Ray screening experience
  • Civil Aviation Authority or Air Cargo Security qualifications
