The Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge is looking to appoint a full-time Research Assistant/Associate to work within PEDAL (the Faculty of Education's research centre for play in education, development and learning) providing research support for projects investigating the role of play in schools, with a specific focus on the influence of playful pedagogy.


The holder of this post will be a key part of the team (funded by the LEGO Foundation) and will work closely with Professor Sara Baker in the Play in Schools research group.

They will be involved in a range of projects relating to playful pedagogy. The projects include early years educators, teachers and teaching assistants, with a focus on early years and primary education.

Writing academic papers will be a core responsibility of the post, alongside broader communication of research findings with the public.


Applicants will have a PhD (or be close to completion) in developmental psychology, education, or closely related field or equivalent experience, with a specific interest in play research.

They will have experience in literature reviews (i.e., scoping reviews, rapid reviews), report writing, and managing quantitative and qualitative data.

Excellent interpersonal skills are essential, alongside the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience and understanding of mixed methods research would be advantageous. The postholder will be supported in undertaking training and professional development to support their career progression.
