Job rolePolicy Adviser - permanent position
Salary up to £50,921 depending on experience
Purpose:
To co-ordinate and advise on policy in relation to tax law and financial services.
The post holder will liaise with the profession and key stakeholders, facilitate, plan, lead and manage projects, promote the views of the Society both internally and externallyand develop guidance to assist the profession.
Key Accountabilities:
- Keep up to date and informed of developments in relation to policy and legislation in tax law and financial services, identifying possible reforms and monitor the impact of developments in the area on the profession.
- Work effectively with relevant the company Committees in delivering committee meetings, developing policy and guidance for the profession
- Draft clear, informed and succinct papers for the company member policy groups, consultation responses to Government and other bodies, evidence to inquiries and commissions, briefings for internal and external use (including for parliamentarians) and otherdocuments, as appropriate.
- Advise on, lead and manage projects in respect of tax law and financial services as these arise
- Be a credible representative for the Society, demonstrating the Society's values in discussions with key policy makers, including government representatives and departments, and legal regulators in relation to proposed policy changes and lobby in supportof the company positions
- Effectively liaise and collaborate with other policy advisors, the company decisionmaking bodies, colleagues within the company, and the office in Wales to provide expert legal policy advice and to support strategic business planning
- Consider and develop practical support for the profession to cope with the impact of changes and in consultation with colleagues, help develop appropriate support measures
- Draft reliable and wellinformed Practice Notes on areas where the profession needs to be informed or advised about new legal developments or changes to existing laws and procedures.
- In collaboration with the Head of Private Law, cultivate strategic partnerships with external organisations and represent the Society on outside bodies as appropriate, liaising with other organisations on issues of mutual interest and where appropriatetake forward joint initiatives
Knowledge, skills and experience
- Expertise in tax and a practical understanding of the legal and economic system and the role of solicitors in it
- Experience of managing policy projects and policy work, with an ability to identify and understand the policy implications of proposals
- Ability to analyse complex legal issues and assess their implications for the profession
- Ability to explain complex issues clearly and concisely for a wide range of audiences
