Description
We welcome applicants to this fixed term 1 year consultant post to cover a career break.
The Medicine for the Elderly department provides facilities for both acute and rehabilitation patients along with appropriate multi-disciplinary support team.
We have 2 wards at RPH (ward 17 and acute frailty assessment unit AFAU) and 3 wards at Chorley hospital (Brindle, Rookwood A and Rookwood B).
Medicine for the Elderly has expanded recently with the establishment of an acute frailty assessment unit (AFAU) at Preston, surgical liaison services (general surgery, vascular surgery and major trauma), hot clinics in the community and 4 new consultant appointments within the last 3 years.
the community hot clinic is housed at a local GP practice.
The team has been pioneering in screening for delirium and dementia in the elderly as well as providing comprehensive geriatric assessments.
The department would offer any newly appointed consultant the opportunity of mentorship. This would be offered by the existing consultant geriatricians who would guide and advise the new appointee.
It would be expected that any new consultant would have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and the Trust would support this process fully.
You will be expected to:
Provide direct input to an elderly medicine ward, assuming a continuous commitment for the care of ward inpatients, even if employed less than full-time, ensuring adequate arrangements are made for leave and off-duty periods.
Deliver care alongside existing geriatricians and surgical teams to the Major Trauma and vascular surgery services, ensuring our elderly surgical patients receive the best possible treatment in order to optimise patient outcome.
Participate in the General (Internal) Medicine consultant 1 in 18 on-call rota at Royal Preston Hospital, including conducting the 'Post-Take' ward round.
Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
