The Role


Internal Audit is integral to Natural Resources Wales's (NRW) operations, working with every area of the organisation providing assurance on governance, risk management and controls, as well as undertaking risk-based audit work.

We are looking to recruit a hardworking individual who is keen to improve public services.

We need someone who brings practicality, pragmatism and customer focus to the technical elements of the internal audit review process.

You need to be a strong influencer, a good communicator and be able to move easily between great teammate and a great team leader as the situation requires.

NRW has a high performing internal audit team who provide assurance over a diverse internal audit plan.

Audits on the 2023/24 Internal Audit Plan include Commercial Strategy Delivery, Management of Hazards on the Welsh Government Woodland Estate, The People Management Transformation Programme, Climate Change Resilience and Net Zero Reporting, which demonstrate the interesting areas the audit team cover.

The plan also includes some more standard audit areas being Accounts Receivable, Procurement, Risk Management and Staff Expenses.


As the Senior Internal Auditor you will lead the delivery and quality review of the audit testing work to draft reporting level.

You will need to have an understanding on how to provide professional technical / specialist expertise to senior management and board members of the organisation in relation to internal audit matters.


You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment.

Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.


What you'll do

Your responsibilities include:

  • Together with the Head of Internal Audit, lead the delivery of the audit plan for NRW, providing specialist technical expertise.
  • As a professional and qualified internal auditor you will bring a systematic, disciplined and professional approach to risk management, control and governance processes.
  • You will have experience of work within and an understanding of the Public Sector Internal Audit Standards.
  • Deputise for the Head of Internal Audit as and when required.
  • Lead and manage audit plan delivery by allocating work, tracking progress for the whole team and by providing quality assurance reviews on all assignments.
  • Supervise the delivery of audit work for junior members of the internal audit team, helping them to learn from your internal audit knowledge and experience.
  • Manage and support the delivery of the quality improvement plan for the Internal Audit services.
  • Lead or oversee delivery of whistleblowing and fraud investigations to draft reporting stages as per Internal Audit procedures.
  • Establish positive and effective relationships across the whole organisation.
  • To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Salary:
£41,150.00-£46,147.00 per year
