This is a developmental role.

The Dietetic Apprentice will work towards progression to the post of a Registered Dietitian, through successful completion of the MSc Dietetics and Leadership programme at Coventry University.

Dietetic Apprentices will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies related to the role of a Registered Dietitian within a variety of health and care settings.


The Dietetic Apprenticeship combines academic and work-based learning through collaboration between Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Coventry University.

The Dietetic Apprentice will be based within the friendly and supportive team of Dietitians at Dorset County Hospital, with a view to joining our team after qualification.

You will be employed full time as a Dietetic Apprentice and will be supported with 20% off the job learning to support you to study the MSc Dietetics and Leadership programme part-time.

As an Apprentice your role will work alongside our support workers under the supervision of our Registered Dieticians and Nutrition Nurses.


Applicants should have experience working as part of a team, IT and organisational skills as well as a positive can-do attitude.

Experience working within health is also desirable.

The applicant should have a caring nature and exceptional interpersonal skills as you will be working closely with patients and other health professionals within the community.


You will be part of the Dorset County Hospital Dietetic Department with a team of 30 Dietetic, Nurse and Admin staff and you will have easy access to them for peer and senior support.

You will also build professional relationships with outside agencies and the wider healthcare network.


Your duties will be to:
Deliver evidence-based, patient-centred dietetic care to patients and other healthcare professionals, under the direction of a Registered Dietitian.

Carry out specific delegated clinical and care tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competency, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Dietitian or other registered care professional

Work with a mentor to take responsibility for developing own clinical competence, leadership and reflective practice skills within the workplace, while on placements and through university study

Develop and improve practical and theoretical knowledge, competence, skills and behaviours to meet the requirements of the Apprenticeship standard.

Develop by the end of the Dietetic Apprenticeship, the ability to work without direct supervision, assessing and delivering evidence-based care independently, within the parameters of a Registered Dietitian


Be proactive in seeking opportunities to develop own knowledge and skills, achieving clinical competencies and the MSc Dietetics and Leadership programme within agreed timeframes.

Seeks support / guidance in timely manner if any difficulties are encountered

COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The post holder will work under the supervision of registered dietitians and registered nutrition nurses and be an active member of the service to:

  • Maintain professional and effective working relationships with:
  • Community healthcare professionals including: general practice staff, community carers, district nurses, distributors of nutritional products, care home staff, including caterers, patients, pharmacists and social services.
  • Other secondary care providers e.g. community hospitals and larger district general hospitals.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality and adhere to information governance principles regarding the communication information which may be sensitive.
  • Identify and collect relevant information from patients/relatives/staff and from written/electronic sources, to inform assessment.
  • Use excellent communication skills to educate and motivate patients to make beneficial changes in relation to their own nutritional health.
  • Use tact, persuasion and negotiation skills, whilst always retaining respect for a person's individuality, needs and preferences.
  • Demonstrate empathy with others yet maintain a professional boundary.
  • Identify and overcome barriers to understanding/communication e.g. dementia, dysarthria, languagebarriers, deafness including the use of interpreters or communication aids as required.
  • Deliver education to small groups of healthcare professionals relating to straightforward topics (requires effective presentation skills).
