Severn Bridges is working in partnership with National Highways on the Specialist Bridges Inspection & Maintenance contract of three bridges in Southwest England over a 15-year period.


Covering the maintenance of three major structures; the 1.4km M5 Avonmouth Bridge, the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge which comprises three structures, the 2.1km Avon Viaduct, 948m Cable Stay and 2.077km Gwent Viaduct as well as the 1.6km M48 Severn Bridge, a suspension bridge that has the second highest tidal range in the world at 14.5m.

We are responsible for the cyclic maintenance, daily structure inspection checks and safety patrols as well as responding to any incidents that impact the structural integrity of the bridges.


As an Apprentice Bridge Inspector, you will join an already established Bridge Inspection Team who will provide support and mentorship as you continue through your career.

You will be stretched, but always supported, surrounded by people who want you to thrive and embrace new challenges, recognising your hard work and looking out for your wellbeing.


You'll also be provided with a "buddy", to assist you as you settle in, and an industry expert as a professional mentor, to help guide you towards achieving your professional qualifications/accreditation.


You will be responsible for:


  • Work alongside Engineers, Technicians, and Inspectors.
  • Collaborate and engage with colleagues and the Client delivering bridge inspections on all three structures.
  • Ensure that all documentation, work orders and service sheets are completed and returned to the office for approvals.
As part of your Apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technicians Level 3 qualification.

You will be fully supported by our partnered college to achieve this qualification by attending college 1-day per week, having 1-2-1 advice and support, e-learning materials, and a whole team of experts on hand for advice and technical knowledge at your office.

At the end of your Apprenticeship, you will move into a guaranteed permanent position with Amey, and your development does not stop there As part of being an employee at Amey, you will be given lots of opportunities to further your development; whether that is by doing further qualifications which Amey will fund through our Apprenticeship Schemes or progressing further in the business into our supervisor positions, the choice is yours


We want to hear from you if you have:

  • 3 GCSEs at grade C or higher including mathematics, English and science, or equivalent or relevant experience,
  • Full driving license,
  • Minimum 18 years old,
  • You must be available to join the programme in April 2024,
  • Passion for developing your skills both professional and personally,
  • Have the enthusiasm to be part of a high performing team and a drive for success,
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety
  • Proactive and academic' approach
