An exciting new post for a Failsafe Officer who will have overall responsibility in providing an effective and efficient failsafe administration of the Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) screening service.

They will work closely with the Screening Co-ordinator to facilitate failsafe mechanisms to identify and also prevent missed screening opportunities and maintain an audit trail for all of the programmes.


Antenatal and newborn (ANNB) screening programmes aim to detect conditions that are present in either the mother or baby that might have an adverse effect on the health of either.

Pregnant women and newborn babies are offered screening tests as an integrated part of their care.


The Antenatal and Newborn Failsafe Officer will provide a specialist administration service that is comprehensive and confidential in accordance with Department, Trust and National stardards, policies and procedures.

To monitor and maintain an accurate screening database of the eligible population and ensure safety of the screening programmes.

To maintain and evolve mechanisms to collect cohort data for quarterly key performance indicators (KPI), annual reports, the National Congenital Anomalies Register of Rare Diseases (NCARDRS) and the Health Protection Agency, as well as provide a daily analysis of impending breaches on failsafe systems and action these appropriately meeting the service specifications.

The role holder will develop and maintain the failsafe processes for:

  • Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme
  • Infectious Disease Screening Programme
  • BCG Vaccination Programme
  • Newborn Bloodspot Programme
  • Newborn infant physical examination programme
  • Fetal medicine referrals/reports and tracking
To ensure these can be tracked and managed to mitigate any risk of incident.

This will incorporate using a variety of internal Trust systems including Cerner/Electronic Patient Records (EPR), NIPE portal, NBBS Portal, ICE, CRIS and SystmOne.

They will work closely with the Screening Co-ordinator to facilitate failsafe mechanisms to identify and also prevent missed screening opportunities and maintain an audit trail for all of the programmes.

The Failsafe Officer will be expected to communicate with other professional involved in the screening process, to participate in the organisation of meetings, take minutes for the meetings, preparation of teaching materials and dissemination of performance management letters.

Manage own workload and prioritises, including acting independently within clearly defined occupational policies, ensuring absolute confidentiality at all times.
