The post holder will benefit from: Supportive MDT working, robust individual and group supervision, including MDT group supervision, appraisal programme, active encouragement to access formal CPD, excellent in-house training offering for leadership and soft skills courses.


We would like to hear from you if you have previous experience working with people with learning disabilities and assessing and managing communication needs and as well as delivering training to others.

A dysphagia qualification is desirable but not essential as this can be provided.

The post holder will be passionate about the rights and welfare of people with learning disabilities and see person centred care as a cornerstone of their practice.

To provide specialist therapeutic assessment, diagnosis and treatment to people accessing services

To provide support, advice and training to carers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team

To work as an autonomous practitioner managing an appropriately complex caseload under the guidance of a senior colleague.

Will, under the guidance of senior colleagues, undertake clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to support their assessment


Will liaise with other necessary agencies to establish robust communication networks with carers, hospitals, other health workers and agencies in order to facilitate an integrated approach to care.

This includes participation in multi-professional meetings, case conferences and other team meeting where they may be the sole representatives of their professional group.

To maintain a high standard of care in accordance with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists & HCPC Codes of Conduct.


To undertake comprehensive communication and dysphagia assessments, interpreting and analysing clinical and non-clinical facts to form an accurate diagnosis and prognosis in a wide range of complex conditions.

To recommend best practice interventions and develop comprehensive care and discharge plans under the supervision of senior colleagues.

To undertake comprehensive risk assessments particularly in the area of dysphagia. Referring to other services as appropriate e.g., videofleuroscopy, under the supervision of senior colleagues.

To introduce and support individuals and their carers in the use alternative and augmentative communication methods as appropriate.


To communicate effectively with people who use our services using methods appropriate to age, level of understanding, cognitive ability, culture and mood.

To provide advice and support to MDT colleagues, regarding people's ability to understand intervention proposals. Gaining valid, informed, consent for treatment or working within the legal framework to act in Best Interest.

To delegate appropriate interventions to junior or unqualified staff whilst maintaining supervision of the care.

To participate in clinical reviews, case conferences and MDT meetings as required.


To communicate and liaise with members of the multi-disciplinary team, other agencies, carers and people who use services providing specialist advice and assessing training needs.

Developing and delivering training programmes as appropriate.

To motivate individuals and carers to make changes to benefit their health.

To research and evaluate evidence based literature to ensure the development of an effective and appropriate clinical service. To present evidence in a format suitable for the individual/group.


To undertake audit, evaluating the effectiveness of interventions in line with National Service Framework and Recommendations as directed by Senior Colleagues.

To undertake Continuous Professional Development, through the use of a portfolio based assessment in line with national directives.
