Job summary:


As an important part of the Ministry of Defence, Defence Intelligence (DI) provides intelligence analysis, specialist outputs and advice that supports decision making across government.

At the heart of DI is the National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence (NCGI).


As part of NCGI the Defence Geographic Centre (DGC) provides geographic information, services, and liaison to UK Defence and the wider Intelligence Community.

It has comprehensive production, collection, information management and dissemination capabilities staffed by specialist Defence Geographers.


We have an exciting opportunity for a hardworking and motivated individual to join our Security Team, working within a specialist group of security corporate enablers as the IT Security Officer (ITSO).

Although no day is the same you will have day to day responsibility for ensuring that IT policy and regulations are adhered, providing IT security advice to staff and contractors, including acting as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the management of IT systems Protectively Marked Material (PMM) and assets.

You will develop your security and IT understanding as a security enabler to ensure DGC continues to deliver required operational outputs to customers.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.


Job description:

You will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • All Security aspects
  • from ITSO responsibilities to supporting other Security Team members in their specialist roles.
  • Accreditation of systems.
  • Management of Security Risk.
  • Management of the Protective Monitoring capability.
  • Engagement with UKStratCom, NCGI Wyton/Pathfinder Security team and other partners as needs arise ensuring compliance and alignment of relevant procedures and protocols.
  • Conduct IT security investigations where appropriate.
  • Reporting security anomalies, infringements, and vulnerabilities to the relevant security authority.
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) concerning the management of Protectively Marked Material (PMM) for IT security.
  • Lead on IT security preparations for partial and full site disposal.
  • Arrange and deliver appropriate Information Security briefs to a wide range of personnel, from new starters and existing staff up to more aware Branch Security Officers.
  • Provide security advice to installation staff and system users.
  • Monitoring the implementation of hardware and software changes and enhancements to ensure that security is not breached.
  • Preparing security reports and conducting security surveys required.
  • Manage and review system security logs.
  • Direct line management responsibilities for 1 staff and supervisory responsibilities for 1 other individual.

Person specification:


We are seeking an individual who can work both independently and flexibly, with the ability to build effective working relationships with a variety of collaborators, including contractors and colleagues in wider DI and Defence security teams.

Excellent IT skills, including word-processing, PowerPoint, and spreadsheets.


Essential criteria:

  • Experience of working in a fastpaced environment where there are contending priorities with potentially tight timeframes.
  • Willing to undertake rolespecific training, to develop that understanding further and keep up to date with the latest security policies.

Desirable criteria:

  • Previous experience of working within a high security environment.
  • Previous security experience.
  • Relevant security qualification
