Description
Job Introduction

The hourly rate for this position is £13.31 plus an additional £2.06 per hour annual leave allowance.

We are excited to announce a new opportunity within Corporate Parenting services for a young adult with lived experience of residential or foster care services in Surrey or elsewhere.

The Corporate Parenting Board in Surrey meets roughly six times per year to review different aspects of our services for looked after children and care leavers.

We listen to the experiences of young people currently living in care or having recently left care, and we discuss key challenges and opportunities for improvement.

As co-chair, you will meet with Councillor Sinead Mooney (the current chair) to plan the agenda and read any documents that have been sent through in advance, and together you will introduce items at the board meeting, facilitate discussion and help keep the meeting to time.

We would like to ask for a minimum commitment of four hours per month, and this would be paid as part of a bank staff contract with Surrey County Council.

The hours could increase over time with the possibility of this becoming an Apprenticeship opportunity.

About the role
The activities below would take place roughly every two months, and we have suggested how long we think each one might take:

  • Attend a pre-meeting with senior leaders to plan the agenda (1 hour)
  • Read papers in advance (2 hours)
  • Meet with the other cochair to run through the agenda (1 hour)
  • Cochair the board meeting (2 hours)
  • Check minutes and actions after the meeting (1 hour)
  • Attend mentoring session with the User Voice & Participation team (30 minutes)

There might be additional events and activities throughout the year to attend, as well as one or two smaller groups that meet regularly to take forward a particular piece of work.

These would also be paid, but optional depending on your availability.

About you
We're looking for someone who is

  • Interested in other people
  • Able to think and reflect before speaking
  • Able to be objective and recognise that one person's experience may not be true for everyone
  • Confident to move a conversation, and people, forward where necessary
  • Able to pick out the key points that someone is making (both in written documents and when someone is talking)

Surrey County Council has signed up to the Care Leaver Covenant and we are committed to providing training and support as well as specific development opportunities.

At Surrey, our values and behaviours are just as important as our skills and abilities. They shape who we are as an organisation. Find out more about the values we follow.
Additional Information
The job advert closes at 23:59 on 10th September 2023.

Interviews will take place week commencing 11th September 2023.

An enhanced DBS 'Disclosure and Barring Service' check for regulated activity (formerly known as CRB) will be required for this role.
