Job summary:


The Government Commercial Organisation (GCO) was established in 2016 to be the employer of senior commercial professionals (Grade 7 and above) and support departments in improving their commercial capability.

The GCO recruits, develops and retains senior commercial talent, helping to drive commercial best practice and improve commercial capability across Government.


Working in to the Government's Chief Commercial Officer, the award winning Commercial Capability Team, was set up within the Cabinet Office to support those in the GCO and the wider Government Commercial Function (GCF).

Over the past few years the size of the GCO has increased (now over 1400 employees), requiring a team of HR professionals to support this population.


We are looking for a highly organised and hard-working individual to join the GCO HR Operations team as a HR Assistant.

As an integral part of our HR community, this role offers a fantastic challenge for an individual who has worked in a fast paced operational environment and aspires to deliver excellent customer service.

Job description:

This role involves managing HR queries from across the employee life cycle e.g. onboarding to annual leave to retirement, in order to effectively support GCO employees.

In doing so, you will support the HR team to deliver successful, high quality and compliant HR services for senior commercial roles in central government.


You will need to be conscientious and focused on delivering a high standard of customer service to senior stakeholders and have good IT skills.

Lead areas of work will be shaped with you and the team dependent on the needs of the organisation at the time.


Main Responsibilities:

  • Onboarding new recruits into the organisation, issuing contracts, answering queries regarding terms and conditions, delivering welcome and induction calls.
  • Working with the rest of the HR Operations team to effectively manage the HR inbox in line with expected service level agreements.
  • Liaising with GCO employees / wider colleagues to resolve HR queries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Developing strong working relationships with internal teams such as workforce planning and recruitment in order to ensure a seamless customer experience.
  • Providing support to the other HR leads (e.g. pay, performance, talent or transitions). through accurate reporting, updating communications and helping employees with actions needed on the HR system.
  • Making changes to employee records on our HR system, ensuring the relevant processes are followed and that employee files are updated accurately.
  • Supporting the overall running and effectiveness of the HR Service through undertaking other adhoc duties as required such as booking meeting rooms, chairing the HR Services team meeting on a rotational basis.

Essential Criteria:


  • An interest in HR (no experience in HR is required)
  • High attention to detail with a focus on accuracy.
  • Experience of working in a fast paced administrative role.
  • Good communication skills, with particular ability to respond to customers professionally, clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent IT skills to include Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Outlook or their Google equivalents.
  • Resilient with the ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
  • Comfortable with data and basic numeracy in order to calculate things like salary changes / annual leave entitlements
