If U Care Share Foundation are looking to appoint a Support Officer (Support After Suicide) to join its support team who work with people who are bereaved by suicide or at risk of suicide.

As a Support Officer you will be providing immediate and appropriate ongoing support to those bereaved by suicide.
Previous experience in a support role is preferred.

Role Priorities

  • To provide immediate and appropriate ongoing support to those bereaved by suicide, either through appointments in the office, visiting them in their homes or at an agreed venue throughout the North East of England, or via the telephone
  • To identify and address social, practical and emotional needs relating to suicide and bereavement by suicide
  • To manage crisis/emergency interventions to prevent suicide
  • Recording data and information around visits complying with GDPR
  • To evaluate and produce service reports from data collected
  • To work with other services to develop relationships which will improve partnerships for IUCSF and provision of service for those accessing our service
  • Develop contacts and referral pathways with other services
  • To represent IUCSF at statutory meetings, contribute to regional and local Suicide Prevention plans and, where appropriate, represent the Charity at National meetings or local events
  • To work directly with Supported People to deliver support after suicide services, in line with agreed pathways
  • To support the management team in all areas of operational delivery areas, providing administrative support where needed, as well as data collection
  • The Support Officer will be responsible for collating data to report back to funders or commissioners as required
  • To take responsibility for personal development and learning in conjunction with your Line Manager
  • To follow the values of approach and behaviours of IUCSF when working and representing the charity
  • To carry out other duties for IUCSF as and when required by management, not limited to the above

Essential Criteria

  • An excellent knowledge and understanding around suicide bereavement and prevention
  • Safeguarding and lone working experience
  • An ability to work independently under difficult circumstances
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and partner organisations
  • Excellent administration skills and experience and an ability to report back to colleagues
  • A strong desire to help and support our work is essential as well as an ability to promote high standards that match the values of IUCSF

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of the affects/impact of suicide
  • Experience and knowledge of working with adults and children who have been bereaved by suicide
  • Experience of working with local agencies providing support with social, practical and emotional needs
  • A good understanding of Microsoft Office would be preferable as well as the motivation to work alone and be trustworthy with data and personal information
  • Qualified to Level 3 or above or with relevant previous experience

Qualifications & Training

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent
  • Be willing to undergo Adult & Child Safeguarding, Equality & Diversity and Data Protection training
  • Be willing to undergo completion of ASIST, STOP or other suicide intervention & prevention training
  • Be willing to undergo training and CPD when necessary or appropriate

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the prevalence of suicide
  • Knowledge of how to access support for individuals who are bereaved by suicide or experiencing suicidal thoughts
  • Knowledge of mental health issues and the ability to recognise the signs and symptoms of a child, young person or adult in distress
  • Knowledge of working with other agencies including housing providers, Coroners, Police, drug & alcohol services, mental health services, welfare rights and third sector nonstatutory services

Job related skills & abilities

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative, following appropriate safeguarding procedures
  • Experience of developing/delivering structured presentations
  • Experience of collating and writing service reports
  • Ability to make critical decisions under pressure to prevent death by suicide
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with colleagues, clients and outside agencies
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of working within specialised, close knit teams and as an individual whilst maintaining knowledge of wider organisational needs
  • Good IT skills

Other requirements

  • Enhanced DBS check
  • Car owner with full clean driving licence
