Transpennine Route Upgrade as
Project Planner

Transpennine Route Upgrade:


The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a Programme of activities that is improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.


Stretching across the North of England, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 29 level crossings.


Proposed improvements will deliver a hard-working, reliable railway for passengers, allowing for trains with more seats, more services and faster journey times.


Brief Description:


To develop project or integration programme plans / schedules on behalf of programme and project managers in order to meet overall requirements of the client / business in most cost effective and reliable manner.


About the role (External):


Some of the key accountabilities of this role are:1) To interact and become a key member of the programme integration team providing a quality service to support the effective integration of projects within the programme.

2) To interact and support the effective information sharing / collection with all the programme stakeholders in an appropriate manner, this includes internal stakeholders, delivery partner organisations, TOCs & FOCs.

3) Prepare a project work breakdown structure and plan / schedule which is capable of delivering the project objectives and providing effective project performance measurement and reporting.

4) To develop a Level 1 or 2 summary schedule in line with the project scheduling principles and processes.

5) Monitor and progress the Level 1 or 2 summary schedule and make changes as required. Develop recovery schedules and contingency plans in order to meet changed objectives as necessary.

6) Report actual performance and variance against plan and forecast outcomes.

Highlight key milestone and critical path issues to members of the team, provide an assessment of the impact of such issues and recommend solutions to correct the position.

7) Monitor and audit plans of delivery partner organisations using schedule diagnostics tools and knowledge of sound planning principles and processes. Monitor delivery partner organisations' planning processes so that they comply TRU schedule management requirements.

8) Interrogate contractor's statement of progress for schedule adherence and payment purposes.

9) Demonstration and presentation of programme schedule performance, period on period variance and trending & schedule quality reviews to internal programme stakeholders.


We need you to have:


  • Relevant experience in the successful scheduling of engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of project planning systems principally Primavera P
  • Experience of using a number of project management scheduling tools & techniques.
  • Understanding of the engineering requirements of work on the railway

It would be advantageous if you have:

  • Membership of a relevant professional body
  • Experience of using schedule diagnostics tools such as Acumen Fuse.
  • Experience of taking the detailed schedules of others and producing a summary level progr
