This post is for a motivated individual with previous experience in a management or leadership role.

The individual will have continuing 24-hour responsibility for the safe management and provision of patient care, ensuring high standards are maintained at all times in compliance with the Key Performance Indicators (KPI's).

To manage practice developments and participate in identifying and achieving the Trust and ward/unit objectives.


Ward 38 has a 16 bedded acute, in patient, medical ward specialising in the care of both oncology and haematology patients.

In addition to the inpatient area there is also a Medical Day Unit which is an area that provides treatment to patients following a referral for an inpatient area, this allows the provision of treatment without an inpatient admission to the Trust.


To have continuing 24 hour responsibility for the safe management and provision of patient care, ensuring high standards are maintained at all times in compliance with the Key Performance Indicators (KPI's).

To manage practice developments and participate in identifying and achieving the Trust and ward/unit objectives.

A professionally credible first level registered nurse with substantial experience of care management within Responsive Care. A well-respected professional and experienced professional who sets high standards and leads by example to motivate and empower others. Deputising for the Senior Clinical Matron.

Professional Standards - monitoring, evaluation and continuous improvement towards patient centred, compassionate care delivery.

To manage and lead staff in compliance with agreed Key Performance Indicators

Demonstrate commitment to IWL principles and flexible working patterns, to meet the needs of the service and staff.

Tackle discrimination and harassment, and promote equality and diversity in the workplace

Reduce sickness absence; work place accidents; and promote zero tolerance on violence against staff.

Take responsibility for own personal development and education and the development of a Personal Development Plan.

Provide leadership and direction to the nursing team to assure that staff fulfil their roles effectively.

Take responsibility for participation in appraisal, professional development planning and clinical supervision to support growth and development, ensuring business goals are clearly communicated and linked to objectives.


In conjunction with the Deputy Ward Matron, to review the training and development of all staff ensuring personal development plans are in place.

To support staff in reaching their full potential as identified through the appraisal process.


Be aware of the Trust Policy relating to Risk management Strategy and understand its implications within the area of work.

To actively engage in all aspects of patient safety and risk management.


Deploy nursing staff over a 24 hours period to meet the needs of the area including the management of recruitment and retention of all staffing in the area.

Assist the Senior Clinical Matron in the investigation and resolution of nursing related complaints and incidents.

Take a lead role in the investigation of disciplinary/untoward incidents occurring within the agreed sphere of responsibility.


To facilitate the development and expansion of the service - assisting the Senior Clinical Matron in the business planning process.

Contribute to the effective budget management of the clinical area, specifically in relation to staff resource management.


To facilitate an integrated approach to quality, against which performance can be measured, including the delivery of the nursing strategy in the clinical area.


Maintaining an effective communication network within and across the Care Groups and outside of the organisation, promoting new ideas and initiatives.

Have an understanding of both Adult and Child Safeguarding and abide by Trust Policy and implement guidelines as appropriate.
