The Challenge


This is an exciting opportunity to join the Foreign Languages Wing team at the Defence Centre for Language and Culture (DCLC) located within the International Group.


This Burnham Lecturer (BL) post is a specialist in French language training and plays an important role in delivering French courses to military personnel.

We are seeking someone with a modern, creative approach to teaching and with a track record in delivering engaging learning experiences to students.

This role requires native or near native language skills in both French and English. This will be tested as a technical skill during the interview process.

This is a part-time role (0.4 FTE) equating to two days per week.

This post is advertised for 14.8 hours per week.


Job description:


As a BL you will undertake a range of activities relating to the delivery of French language training to Defence personnel.

Working alongside 3 other BLs (and supervised by a Senior Burnham Lecturer) you will primarily deliver French language training to a variety of students in the Armed Forces, design and develop course materials and play an important role in quality assurance activities which ensure the continuous improvement of language delivery.


As part of our delivery approach, you will play an important role in creating engaging materials to support student-centred face to face and online learning.

As such, you will be expected to stay up to date on the latest research, delivery approaches and technologies to support language learning.

Person specification:


Teaching/ Pedagogic

  • Demonstrate full range of required competencies in the delivery of French language training across all 4 skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) from beginner to advanced level at NATO STANAG SLP
  • SLP4 as required, and in accordance with Burnham Lecturer terms and conditions of service
  • Monitor, account for and report on student performance to include the generation of student profiles and course reports
  • Provide educational guidance/ mentoring to students
  • Manage provision of lesson packs and course materials to students
  • Conduct formative assessment in accordance with internal policy
  • Support the production of timetables and student differentiation
  • Support the drive for continuous improvement, particularly in student proficiency and summative performance

Curriculum Formation, Adaptation of Teaching Programmes and Development of Teaching Materials

  • In accordance with direction, design new courses in response to emerging requirements
  • Support the development and implementation of Defencerelevant immersion training

Course Development

  • Assist in programming and integration of relevant cultural training
  • Develop and maintain course materials to ensure relevance and currency
  • Maintain efficient storage, retrieval, availability and distribution of learning materials via the Virtual Learning Environment and other media in accordance with Defence Information Management policy
  • Integrate and use Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) resources in course development

Research

  • Maintain currency in new developments in language teaching methodology
  • Maintain (and create) a stock of authentic, relevant materials to support delivery
  • Monitor, research and advise on the availability of published French language teaching materials

Professional Development
Carry out additional duties as directed by Defence Academy chain of command.

About our Team
The International Group permanent staff comprises 80 personnel over two sites, of whom approximately two thirds are Civil Service.

It is headed up by a Captain (OF5) and DCLC is headed up by a military OF4 and a civil servant B2.

The output of DCLC is training students to a required level in a variety of languages and associated cultures, in preparation for a range of Defence operational roles.

This French BL role sits within Foreign Languages Wing and works alongside 3 others French language BL as well as 1 SBL, together with contracted tutors when required.


Qualifications:
