Job description:

This is an exciting opportunity to play your part and support HM Coastguard to deliver its emergency response function.


The Assistant Director HM Coastguard Commercial and Asset Management will be responsible for the management and delivery of contracts and projects for HM Coastguard.

Ensuring that all contract and projects are managed and delivered in line with infrastructure projects authority guidance and commercial best practice and that robust processes are in place, to ensure delivery, value for money and that the best commercial outcomes are achieved for HM Coastguard.

The role is pivotal in in within HM Coastguard. Creating an environment in which contracts and projects can succeed in supporting delivery of HM Coastguard key functions
- working effectively together, managing resources and dependencies across projects, ensuring effective governance structures are in place and delivering benefits and outcomes as set out in business cases.


Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing a strategy to deliver the best outcomes for the aviation services we provide to Government and the general public.
  • Lead on delivery of key programmes and projects which support HMCG operations, including UK Search and Rescue aviation, Radio Network Renewal and future aviation counter pollution spray provision. These programmes have a combined contract value in excess of £1.7 billion.
  • Maintaining the Agency's intelligent client function with respect to the maritime and aviation contracted services carried out by commercial organisations on behalf of HM Coastguards.
  • The delivery and contract management of the current HM Coastguard contracted arrangements.

Person specification:
About You

  • You will hold or be willing to work towards a recognised Project Management qualification (such as Agile, APM, PRINCE2).
  • As a strong leader you will provide your team with guidance and support, developing their knowledge and confidence in their abilities.
  • You will have exceptional communication and relationship building skills that will allow you to liaise with stakeholders of varying seniority levels.
  • You would be a confident negotiator with the ability to manage complex and high value commercial contracts.
  • You are someone who has experience in leading largescale programmes.

Additional Information
This role will be based in the Southampton HQ.

MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work.


The expectation is that you will spend a minimum
60% of your working time based at your principal workplace
or out on official business.

Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.

There may be a requirement for occasional travel on official duty within the UK, which may involve overnight stays. Notice will be given prior to travel.
