Job Role:

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant


Job Overview:


As a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) in a Specialist SEN School, you will play a crucial role in providing essential support to students with a range of complex and profound special educational needs.

This role is based in a school that caters exclusively to children and young people with various SEN conditions, ensuring a nurturing and inclusive environment where each student can reach their full potential.

Working closely with the teaching staff and SEN professionals, your primary responsibility is to support students' academic, social, and emotional development while promoting their independence and well-being.


Key Responsibilities:


Individualised Support:
Provide one-to-one and small-group support to students with EHCPs, addressing their specific learning and developmental needs. Adapt instructional materials and strategies to suit individual learning styles.


Inclusive Classroom Support:
Collaborate with the classroom teacher to promote inclusivity and integration of students with SEN into mainstream lessons. Offer support during whole-class activities, ensuring all students can participate and learn effectively.


EHCP Implementation:

Assist in the implementation of EHCPs, working closely with the SEN Coordinator and external agencies to deliver specialised interventions, therapies, and accommodations as outlined in the plans.


Differentiated Instruction:

Collaborate with teachers to differentiate the curriculum and classroom activities to meet the diverse needs of students with various SEN conditions.


Behaviour Management:
Employ appropriate behaviour management techniques to create a positive and supportive learning environment. Implement behaviour plans and strategies designed to foster positive behaviour and minimise disruptions.


Personal Care:

Provide personal care assistance, if required, to students with physical and medical needs, ensuring their safety, dignity, and comfort within the school environment.


Communication and Liaison:
Maintain effective communication with parents/guardians, offering regular updates on students' progress and any relevant concerns. Collaborate with external professionals, therapists, and support agencies to maximise support for the students.


Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records of student progress, achievements, and behavioural incidents. Contribute to the preparation of reports and reviews related to EHCPs.


Sensory Integration:
Create a sensory-friendly learning environment and utilise sensory integration techniques to assist students with sensory processing challenges.


Assistive Technology:
Familiarise students with assistive technology devices and software to enhance their learning experience and communication abilities.


Therapy Support:
Collaborate with therapists and other support professionals, assisting in the implementation of therapy programs within the classroom setting.


Training and Professional Development:

Participate in relevant training and development opportunities to enhance your skills and understanding of different SEN conditions and effective teaching strategies.


Safeguarding:
Follow safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure the welfare and safety of all students. Report any safeguarding concerns to the appropriate personnel.


Qualifications and Skills:


  • A relevant qualification in Education or Special Educational Needs is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Experience working with students with SEN, especially those with EHCPs, is highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge of a range of SEN conditions and strategies to support diverse learning needs.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external agencies.
  • Empathy, patience, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • An understanding of relevant policies and procedures related to safeguarding and child protection.
  • Willingness to undergo necessary background checks as required by the educational institution.
