Job description


Are you experienced in generating estimates for projects? Are you looking to progress your career whilst supporting our UK's armed forces? We may have the perfect opportunity for you Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and the SDA are expanding their Estimating teams and you could be the person we are looking for.


Estimating is a vital part of what we do, ensuring the delivery of significant projects to our customers, on budget and on time.


You will act as estimating or cost modelling lead for medium to higher value or complexity projects, supporting business case development and investment decisions, options appraisal, and contribute to regular reviews of programme costs.

You will also act as an Estimating Subject Matter Expert (SME) providing guidance to projects and support services.


We have a fantastic opportunities for you within DE&S and SDA to be involved in projects across a variety of areas supporting programmes that include next generation aircraft, combat and support vehicles, complex weapons, artillery systems, ships, digital, cyber and space.

Your day-to-day role will involve a diverse range of tasks including reviewing and producing Estimates, internal/industry modelling, and the possibility of leading a small team.

You will also find yourself building, reviewing, and populating cost models, along with undertaking cost risk/business analysis.


We operate a hybrid working environment and the expectation is to attend site at least once a week, however this may vary dependent on business needs.

Whilst based at our Abbey Wood site, you will be expected to attend the site more frequently initially to familiarize yourself with the site, the team and position you will be working on.

Due to security requirements, some of these posts will be Reserved for Sole UK Nationals.


About the role
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead on delivering and assuring estimating products for high value projects utilising a range of estimating tools, techniques, and methodologies.
  • Independently deliver complex cost estimates using a range of mandated Cost Models.
  • Identify cost trends and insight at strategic level to support portfolio management activities, business change initiatives, and provide senior staff with intelligence and analysis to support decision making.
  • Analyse data from sources across Defence international partners and its suppliers to support benchmarking and production of robust complex cost models.
  • Train and develop team members in estimating to aid cost estimating understanding amongst stakeholders.
  • Assist with the scoping of model requirements and provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) modelling expertise including establishment and maintenance of relationships across stakeholder groups.

Person specification

  • Experience generating cost estimates for projects.
  • Experience generating supporting documentation and artefacts such as the 'Basis of Estimate'.
  • Experience of assuring/ensuring quality of outputs.
  • Knowledge of analysis tools and techniques such as Excel.
It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following desirable criteria:

  • Experience of broader project delivery discipline (risk management, planning & scheduling, cost control etc).
